Editorial Conventions

Scribal abbreviations are resolved and marked in italics. ‘Jhu xpo’ is resolved as ‘Jhesu Christo’ and ‘xpiano’ as ‘christiano’. Obscure passages or textual difficulties are clarified in accompanying footnotes, but editorial emendation has been limited to cases in which understanding is impeded and editorial intervention therefore absolutely necessary. When this is the case, all emendations are marked with square brackets and the decision behind the emendation is detailed in an accompanying footnote. In this way, words, phrases, or sentences that are possibly or probably a result of scribal error have been left as they stand if they do not impede overall understanding; the alternatives that appear in Voragine's Latin and, where relevant, in other santorales are detailed in an accompanying footnote. Grammatically or syntactically ambiguous phrases or sentences have been left as they stand if (a) they do not impede overall understanding and/or (b) they occur sufficiently enough throughout the manuscript for them to be considered less an error and more a peculiarity of the manuscript or scribe. This is the case, for example, with a number of ‘e’ conjunctions, which are syntactically problematic, but which have not been removed due to the frequency with which they occur in this way: such as, ‘Enpero que fuy nascida en perpetua criada e só en las siete artes muy sabia, e todas estas cosas desprecié por amor del Nuestro Señor Jhesu Christo’ (Vida de santa Catalina, lines 42–44).
