Early Holocene Basketry and Cordage from Daisy Cave San Miguel Island, California

Abstract

Early Holocene archaeological deposits from a San Miguel Island cave have produced sea grass artifacts that include two basketry fragments and hundreds of pieces of cordage. The twined basketry pieces, dating to about 8,600 years ago, may be sandal fragments. Pieces of cordage have been found in strata dated as early as 9,900 years ago. The woven artifacts from Daisy Cave roughly double the antiquity of such objects from the Pacific Coast of North America and add significantly to our knowledge of early Holocene technologies along the California coast.

En la era temprana del Holoceno los depósitos arqueológicos de una cueva de la isla San Miguel produjéron artefactos hechos de pasto marίtimo, tales como dos fragmentos de canastos y cientos de trosos de cordones. El tejido de las piezas de canastos con fecha de 8,600 ańos de antigüedad encontrados en este lugar pueden ser tambien fragmentos de sandalias (huaraches). En el mismo lugar tambien se han encontrado depositos de cordones con una antigúuedad de por lo menos 9,900 años. Los artefactos de tejido de la cueva “Daisy Cave” es el doble de la antigüedad de los objectos arqueológicos de la costa del Pacifico Norteamericano y tambien añade un aprendisaje importante para nuestra información sobre la tecnologίa temprana del Holoceno a lo largo de la costa de California.
