Following the publication of ‘Art libraries in polytechnics’ in Art Libraries Journal, 4(1), Spring 1979, it seems appropriate to outline some of the reservations towards it that have been voiced by several Polytechnic art librarians, lest what has appeared as an ARLIS policy statement be taken to imply a total commitment to it by all of those whom it concerns most.

A certain amount of historical background seems necessary to cast light on the introductory statement which appeared alongside the statement when published.
