In the first article in this series on learning about Aborignals, Mr. Spalding suggested that racist modes of thought were embedded deeply in Australia#x2019;s settler community – “much of our progess and comfort has been gained at the price of Aboriginal distress …” A second article pointed to inadequacies in references to Aboriginal people in various Social Studies books dating from the beginning of the century to recent times.

In this third article attention is focussed upon the processes of indoctrination.

There is much discussion today of the need in education to recognize the culturally pluralistic situation in which many Aboriginal children find themselves. Balgo Hills school shows one effective way of implementing this recognition. What approaches are being taken in other schools in Australia?

Mr. Farnham describes the setting of one of Queensland’s schools for Aboriginal pupils. Would other teachers like to write in descriptions of their settings? As well as being of interest to teachers, such descriptions would, I am sure, stimulate Aboriginal pupils.

I visited Papunya School in March and found the staff enthusiastic and excited. They are working out a school program so that they can utilize fully, for the children’s benefit, the diverse skill and talents of the teachers.

Readers will be interested in the approach being taken by the West Australian Department of Public Health in offering health services to Aboriginal people.

This paper is concerned with the art education of Aboriginal children. An attempt has been made to look at the situation as it exists, particularly in relation to fringe-dwelling Aboriginal children. This has been accomplished by means of a questionnnaire and direct teaching and observation of Aboriginal children on Palm Island and library research. The authors made a number of comparisons with data from research carried out overseas on similar groups, although they realise that no dogmatic conclusions can be made concerning Aboriginal children without further research in Australia.
