6 Fol. 13 of ASS which should have contained the colophon of the first story in the collection, viz. the Ṛṣipañcaka-jātaka, and the beginning of the next story, the Sārthavāha-jātaka, is missing. Hence Bendal's error in the numbering of the stories, and also mine, when I gave a summary of the contents of ASS (Handurukande, Ratna, The Avadānasārasamuccaya, Studies in Indo-Asian Art and Culture, I, New Delhi, 1972, 7989Google Scholar). I was able to identify story No. 1 of ASS on reading a Tokyo manuscript called the Jātakamālāvadāna-sūtra (Matsunami, S., A catalogue of the Sanskrit manuscripts in the Tokyo University Library, Tokyo, 1965, No. 139Google Scholar). This manuscript contains the first three stories of ASS.

9 The following suggestions for emending the text given by Emmerick can be made, based on a comparative study of the manuscripts referred to above. The numbers refer to Emmerick's footnotes. 10, read prasūtā for prasū; saṃkucitāṇgaś ca for saṃkucita-gātras; nairāśyopahata° for nairāāpahata°; 12, satīm aśanapra 〈〉 vaṇādivarjitāṃ for satāṃ aśanapravaṇādaivrjitāṃ; 13, cāṇḍāla-dārako for caṃḍāla°; khaṇḍamallakaṃ for khaṇḍam adhvakam; gacchedānīṃ for gachedānīṃ; 14, °nipāna-bhūtaṃ for °nipāta-bhūtaṃ; rathyā-reṇu° for rathyāveṇu°; 15, alakṣmīkam for na lakṣmīkam.

10 The following extracts are from my edition of the text. The numbers following the quotations refer to the folios of ASS.
