1. The precise number of members of the society according to its most recently published membership list is 1436. This includes all members as of September 1989 (Church History 58 [1989]: 553–580Google Scholar).
2. The compilation provided by the membership committee is contained in Appendix B. Professor Ebbie Smith of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary set up the grid by which the results of the questionnarie could be categorized and tabulated.
3. Five questionnaires were so incomplete that the membership committee did not include them in their tabulation.
4. In 1968, 75 percent of the respondents indicated that they held, or were retired from, teaching positions, and 75 percent indicated that they were ordained to the Christian ministry. While there is no way to know how many of the 731 responents in one category were among the 731 respondents in the other category, it stands to reason that twenty years ago a significant number of the members of the society were teachers who had been ordained to the ministry.
5. Since many ASCH members maintain memberships in several of these organizations, it is important to keep in mind that these figures do not provide a picture of the overall proportions of ASCH members who are also members of other organizations.
