Congratulations to 2022 Gertrude Lippincott Awardee (Dance Studies Association) Royona Mitra for her article "Unmaking Contact: Choreographic Touch at the Intersections of Race, Caste, and Gender." Mitra's article represents a timely interrogation of the cultural politics of contact improvisation. Deftly re-conceptualizing core concepts of “touch” and “contact” that are used commonly in discourses that emerge from and privilege the Global North, she reframes them through Indian cultural frameworks. The committee envisions the essay to be a key touchstone for future scholarship in Dance Studies.
