583 – Depression in Baghdad - A Sociodemographic Study

122 depressed patients(82 females 40 males)examined as an out patient cases were studied for various sociodemographic factors during the period from October to may2001-2002in this sample depression seems to affected the middle age females, married patients more frequently, 2/3of the sample had low literacy level this proportion not reached post primary education, most of the patients live in urban areas, about 1/2 of the females patients were house wife, majority of females patients attepted suicide by nonviolent methods(by over dose, poisoning while males by more violent methods (self injury, shooting)family environment and recent life events were found as important factor in precipitating the illness, about 1/2 of female patients experienced at least one of the vulnerable factor(4 vulnerable factors)which proved tobe of synergistic interaction when combined with provoking life events, study shows less significant of vulnerable factors in male patients.
