Inbreeding depression of heterosis in muga silkworm, Antheraea assama

Abstract

Heterosis in Antheraea assama Westwood in respect of oviposition is observed over mid-parental value only in respect of four crosses viz. N × W1, N × W2, Y × W1, and Y × W2 and there is no inbreeding depression in oviposition rate until F3 generation. The cocoon weight and silk content in all the six crosses exhibit significant heterosis over both mid-parental and better parental values. In the F3 generation significant inbreeding depression is noted for both the characters and the values are at par to the mid-parental value. Commercial exploitation of hybrid vigour therefore should be limited up to F2 generation.

Résumé

On trouve l'hétérosis dans Antheraea assama Westwood en ce qui concern l'oviposition sur la valeur mi-paternelle pour quatre croisements seulement, à savoir N × W1, N × W2, Y × W1, Y × W2 et il n'y a pas de dépression pendant croisement consanguin dans le degré de l'oviposition jusqu'à la génération F3. Le poids du cocoon et le contenu de la soie dans tous les croisements montrent la vigueur considérable de l'hybrid sur la valeur mi-paternelle aussi bien que la valeur mailleur paternelle. On voit la dépression considérable croisement consanguin dans la génération F3 pour les deux caractéres et les valeurs sont égales de la valeur mi-paternelle. Donc on doit limiter l'exploitation commerciale de la vigueur hybrid jusqu'à la génération F2.
