Behavioural responses to poison baits by the termite Hodotermes mossambicus (Hagen)

Abstract

A basic study of the behavioural responses of the harvester termite, Hodotermes mossambicus (Hagen) to poison baits was undertaken. Laboratory trials revealed that the collected baits were not incorporated into the termite nest food stores. The baits were never eaten because the nest-bound larval caste selects the food to be consumed by the entire colony, from the material collected by the foraging caste. Moreover, field observations have shown that the commercial bait, Kamikaze®, bears no resemblance to the grass collected by the termite foragers. This study revealed that observations of foraging and feeding behaviour of the termites are necessary before designing control measures.

Résumé

Une première étude des réponses comportementales de Hodotermes mossambicus aux appâts empoisonnés a été entreprise pour déterminer l'utilisation des appâts. Les observations sur le terrain ont démontré que l'appât commerciel Kamikaze® ne ressemble aucunement à l'herbe ramassée par les termites fourrageurs. Des épreuves au laboratoire ont révélé que les appâts ramassés n'ont pas été incorporés aux provisions du nid. Les appâts n'ont done jamais été consommées. Des observations du comportement des termites a montré que e'est la caste larvale, limitée au nid, et non la caste fourrageuse, qui choisit finalement la nourriture que la colonie consommera. Cette étude a révélé qu'il faut faire des observations du comportement des termites qui fourragent et de ceux qui s'alimentent avant d'établir des mesures de contrôle.
