How do French children acquire the grammatical system of their native language so easily? Many hypotheses have been put forward and experimentally tested to solve this mystery. Generative theories argue that grammar is a universal and innate ability ready to be instantiated after birth. Within this framework, grammatical development is seen as a process whereby universal grammar gradually settles into the language-specific structures of the linguistic input that children receive in the first years of life. In the last decades however, many researchers of child language development have suggested other explanations. Current functional-cognitive research (cf. Langacker, 1988, 2000; Bybee, 1995, 2002; Elman et al., 1996; Tomasello, 2003; Diessel, 2004), proposes a usage-based approach to first language acquisition, where grammar is shaped by usage, and linguistic constructions are taken from parental input and gradually generalised by the child. Usage-based theories thus consider grammatical development as a dynamic process which emerges and evolves, in parallel with cognitive and psychological development, through the use of symbolic patterns which consolidate into grammatical constructions.

This study investigates the expression of past temporal reference in a highly conservative variety of Acadian French spoken in the Baie Sainte-Marie region of Nova Scotia, Canada. Variationist analysis of data from a sociolinguistic corpus for the village of Grosses Coques reveals a split between narrative and conversational discourse, with variation mainly between use of the passé simple and the imparfait in the former and between the passé composé and the imparfait in the latter. The passé simple remains in robust use in this variety and is constrained in a manner similar to that found in 17th-century representations of colloquial speech involving narration.

L'objectif de cet article est de montrer comment le marqueur parenthétique tu vois s'est pragmaticalisé au cours des siècles. Afin de déterminer s'il existe une corrélation entre l'émergence de contextes syntaxiques et l'apparition de sens nouveaux pour ce marqueur, nous avons adopté une méthode d'analyse, en diachronie, de données de corpus pseudo-orales. Après avoir mis en exergue les résultats d'analyse en termes de déplacement sémantique et de complexification syntaxique, l'article montre in fine en quoi le recours à la grammaticalisation semble insuffisant pour expliquer l'évolution des parenthétiques et propose d'inscrire ce processus dans la perspective plus large du changement linguistique.

Dans cet article, nous nous intéressons aux compléments du nom indéterminés introduits par à (plante à fleurs, tasse à café), pour lesquels nous proposons une classification fondée sur les propriétés sémantiques du second nom (N2) et le type de relation qu'il entretient avec le premier (N1). Nous montrons que ces propriétés rendent compte du comportement syntaxique de N2 vis-à-vis de la détermination, des numéraux et de la modification. Nous comparons également les N2 indéterminés à ceux qui renvoient à des ingrédients (tarte au citron), et qui apparaissent nécessairement déterminés.

This paper presents the results of a study that employed a questionnaire and a matched-guise experiment to investigate the attitudes that Quebec francophones, anglophones, French-English bilinguals and allophones hold towards Quebec French compared to European French. The findings indicate that attitudes towards Quebec French on the solidarity dimension have improved since the 1980s, while attitudes on the status dimension have remained the same. These findings are interpreted in the context of the burgeoning of Quebecers’ sense of belonging to their society on the one hand, and the tradition of viewing French as a monocentric rather than a pluricentric language on the other hand.

The Paris corpus was financed by the Agence Nationale de la Recherche, in the context of two research programmes entitled ‘Acquisition du Langage et Grammaticalisation’ (2005–2008, http://anr-leonard.ens-lsh.fr/) and ‘Communication Langagière chez le Jeune Enfant’ (CoLaJE, 2009–2012, http://colaje.risc.cnrs.fr). The aim of the two programmes was to collect new French data and add five new longitudinal corpora to the international database of the CHILDES project (http://childes.psy.cmu.edu/, MacWhinney, 2000), improve researchers’ transcription and coding systems to enable them to study the emergence and development of grammatical patterns used by children between age one and seven, and compare child and adult speech. The programmes brought together specialists from various fields of language acquisition in order to study language development in the same longitudinal corpus from a multimodal and interdisciplinary perspective. The analyses aimed to find regularities in acquisition for each child and across the children.

Cet article étudie les effets de sens du passé composé (PC) sous la portée d'un adverbe situeur futur en français. Nous partons de l'hypothèse de Sthioul (1998) selon laquelle cet usage du PC impose une représentation conçue comme passée depuis une projection allocentrique du moment de la parole située dans le futur. Cet article considère que le PC en usage futur est un usage métalinguistique du passé composé et donc un usage métareprésentationnel (ou interprétatif, cf. Sperber & Wilson 1995) du langage. Nous explorons les restrictions d'emploi de cet usage par des critères sémantiques (télicité, agentivité) et concluons qu'aucun d'entre eux ne forme une contrainte forte alors qu'il y a une condition pragmatique d'emploi beaucoup plus contraignante pour l'usage futur du passé composé. En particulier, nous suggérons que i) ce qui est représenté au futur n'est pas le procès mais l'état résultant (ce qui le rapproche du PC de l'accompli), ii) que l'état résultant est typiquement désirable et a déclenche une inférence à propos de l'attitude ou du comportement à tenir dans le présent dans la perspective de l'état résultant au futur. Ainsi, le passé composé en usage futur prend sa pertinence au présent et non directement au futur.

In this study we investigate code-crossing and multilingualism among 13–14 year olds in three schools (five classes) in the northern French city of Lille, based on data elicited during one-to-one interviews as part of a broader study of adolescent language in the city. With regard to code-crossing the study focuses on the indicative evidence of acquisition of (dialectal) Arabic by adolescents of European or Metropolitan French family background, gleaned from a series of language tests. The results suggest that for subjects of Metropolitan French background, interethnic friendships, bolstered by playful use of the language of the Other, are the single most important factor in non-institutional acquisition of Dialectal Arabic. These findings receive a degree of confirmation from the professed familiarity with a variety of Rom in one class group. Cross-ethnic language acquisition does not, however, appear to correlate in any significant way with factors that may be said to frame the socio-cultural space (such as tastes in music and style of dress) in which these teenage informants were moving at the time of the fieldwork. With regard to multilingualism subjects were found to have had exposure to a variety of European and one West-African language (Wolof). On the evidence of the language tests, the largest ethnically defined minority group, the Maghrebians manifested a range of competence in Arabic, with apparently significant differences between subjects of Algerian and Moroccan extraction.

La prosodie, qui fait l'objet d'une acquisition précoce chez le jeune enfant, pourrait contenir des indices (pauses, intonation, accentuation) susceptibles de faciliter la mise en place des premières combinaisons de deux mots et des premières relations syntaxiques. Nous proposons d'examiner les caractéristiques prosodiques des productions de Madeleine, entre 11 et 23 mois. L'analyse acoustique de 550 productions fait apparaître que les premiers mots apparaissent vers 12 mois de façon concomitante à la réalisation accrue de proto-mots bisyllabiques, produits avec des contours montants et montants-descendants, dont la forme temporelle se rapproche de la forme adulte. Les combinaisons de mots émergent ensuite, à partir de 18 mois, caractérisées par un contour d'intonation unique et modulé qui permet d'exprimer leurs liens de dépendance.

Little is known about what guides children in their acquisition of grammatical categories. This paper investigates how semantic knowledge could be involved in discovering these categories, thus confronting two competing hypotheses: are semantic categories innate, or are they developed in a piecemeal fashion? We tested for regular associations between basic semantic dimensions and the development of the founding categories of noun and verb. Six perceptually based semantic dimensions (Parisse and Poulain, 2010), shared by nouns and verbs but potentially distinctive, are coded in the productions of three children aged 1;06 to 2;06. Our results suggest that semantic dimensions do not offer an entry into the early differentiation of noun and verb categories.

In this paper, we review the various types of epistemic usages of the (simple and anterior) future tenses in French with the assumption that what actually licenses their occurrence is not a semantic feature such as aspect but pragmatic effects that give relevance to the utterance at the moment of speech. We review the main hypotheses proposed in the relevant literature and conclude that epistemic futures seem to fulfill the function of communicating – through a metarepresentation of a future verification – not only epistemic modality and evidentiality, but also, and perhaps especially, the inference that a particular course of action has to be undertaken from the perspective of a state of affairs that is true in the present.

Dans les études ayant conclu à une dépréciation de la variété endogène, les attitudes linguistiques ont été suscitées à partir de stimuli généraux (p.ex., accent). Dans cet article, nous soulignons les limites de ces travaux, en montrant au travers d'une récente enquête que la réponse à un stimulus général est formulée sur la base d'une partie seulement des variantes lexicales, celles relevant d'un contact de langues et présentant un déficit de prestige. Les résultats de cette recherche mettent parallèlement au jour la légitimité de tout un pan de variantes endogènes (archaïsmes et innovations romandes). Tout en expliquant pourquoi certaines ressources linguistiques sont plus susceptibles que d'autres de servir de fondement à la variété endogène légitime, nous discutons les facteurs contribuant à l'autonomisation du français en Suisse romande.

When adjectives of English origin are pluralized in French, they follow one of three patterns: they receive inflection, reject inflection, or accept both forms. Curiously, these patterns of morphological variation have never been analyzed. This study identifies inflection-inhibiting constraints for a closed corpus of French dictionary-attested English adjectives and reveals that uninflected and variable adjectives do violate the standard native rule of adjective agreement, yet the constraints that block inflection are French-derived. A second feature of these adjectival anglicisms is that the nominal counterpart, if it exists, always receives native inflection (des jeans baggy vs. des baggys). The difference in word class, and specifically the feature of grammatical gender, may account for the contrastive behavior.

Cet article est consacré aux rapports qui existent entre l'identité et la norme en matière de langue dans le discours qu'on trouve sous la plume des chroniqueurs de langage canadiens-français. Notre objectif est d'analyser comment ces derniers définissent l'identité de leurs compatriotes et quelle importance ils accordent à des considérations identitaires dans leur discours à propos du français canadien et de sa légitimité. L'analyse porte sur 12 chroniques, écrites par autant d'auteurs différents, publiées dans la presse canadienne-française entre 1865 et 1996. Les résultats de notre analyse tendent à montrer qu'il ne suffit pas d'étudier comment les chroniqueurs canadiens-français perçoivent l'identité de leurs compatriotes – notamment en termes de degré d'autonomie par rapport à l'identité française – pour comprendre la façon dont ils ont évalué le français au Canada; il faut aussi, et surtout, tenir compte du poids que ces chroniqueurs attribuent à l'identité dans leur conception de la langue si on veut bien comprendre leur façon de définir la norme.

Children's awareness of grammar can be traced in the way they use and particularly misuse morphology and constructions in what Clark (2001) calls ‘emergent categories’. We focus our longitudinal study on a French speaking child's use of possession markers (Anaé, Paris Corpus), and her creative nonstandard productions (la poupée de moi for ma poupée/my doll). We provide a detailed analysis of the ways in which she moves between a global strategy thanks to which she locates, identifies and uses whole blocks or constructions without analyzing them, and a more analytic strategy that parallels her progressive mastery of the semantic and syntactic complexity of grammatical morphemes.

Cette étude adopte une approche à la fois fonctionnaliste et usage-based de l'acquisition du langage pour rendre compte des formes non conventionnelles de référence à soi en position sujet chez une enfant francophone, Anaé, entre 1;05 et 3;00. D'une part, nos analyses quantitatives et qualitatives révèlent la présence, après 2 ans, d'un paradigme de verbes à valeur modale pour lesquels la référence à soi en position sujet peut être implicite. Pour ces verbes, comme pour tous les verbes avant 2 ans, un sujet grammatical est essentiellement produit dans des situations où l'enfant exprime un positionnement intersubjectif. D'autre part, la production de formes non conventionnelles met en évidence la création d'associations entre des formes et des contextes interactionnels spécifiques. L'analyse du langage adressé à l'enfant suggère que ces associations trouvent notamment leur origine dans le langage de la mère.

This study examines how intonation contours prevalent in a Parisian French urban youth vernacular (Conein and Gadet, 1998; Fagyal 2003, 2005) index sociolinguistic meanings for Parisian French listeners. In a web-based experiment, listeners placed recordings with stress patterns ranging from clearly penultimate (‘non-standard’) to clear phrase-final (‘standard’) in cities whose linguistic correctness they had previously evaluated. Stimuli with the most numerous and strongest cues to penultimate prominence were reliably identified with cities low in linguistic prestige. Sociolinguistic experience was shown to predict stimulus evaluations. The conclusions reached speak to the socio-indexicality of certain Parisian intonation contour types and the methodology used herein may lend itself to future studies of socially sensitive language variation.

This paper examines the use of English-origin forms by Ironman France participants, with focus given to those having a widely used French equivalent (e.g. la finish and le bike). Investigation centres on print media, online discussion forums, and participant interviews. Innovative borrowings are argued to derive from a fetishization of English along the lines of Kelly Holmes (1997, 2000), whereby connotation is equally or more important than reference. It is further suggested that participants employ these innovative forms to distinguish themselves and solidify group identity, constituting a sort of sociolinguistic niche.

Cet article étudie les différences distributionnelles entre les emplois référentiels du SNdém en français et en néerlandais. En soumettant les données issues de deux corpus comparables (Dutch Parallel Corpus et Corpus de Namur) à notre modèle triangulaire systématique des emplois du SNdém, nous constatons que deux explications majeures permettent de comprendre la plus grande partie des divergences attestées au niveau des emplois référentiels du SNdém en français et en néerlandais, à savoir des normes stylistiques différentes en relation avec des différences linguistiques et des divergences au niveau du degré de déicticité des SNdém en français et en néerlandais.
