In this paper, we show that Leavitt path algebras of weighted graphs and Leavitt path algebras of separated graphs are intimately related. We prove that any Leavitt path algebra $L(E,\omega )$ of a row-finite vertex weighted graph $(E,\omega )$ is $*$-isomorphic to the lower Leavitt path algebra of a certain bipartite separated graph $(E(\omega ),C(\omega ))$. For a general locally finite weighted graph $(E, \omega )$, we show that a certain quotient $L_1(E,\omega )$ of $L(E,\omega )$ is $*$-isomorphic to an upper Leavitt path algebra of another bipartite separated graph $(E(w)_1,C(w)^1)$. We furthermore introduce the algebra ${L^{\mathrm {ab}}} (E,w)$, which is a universal tame $*$-algebra generated by a set of partial isometries. We draw some consequences of our results for the structure of ideals of $L(E,\omega )$, and we study in detail two different maximal ideals of the Leavitt algebra $L(m,n)$.

We compute the number of points over finite fields of the character stack associated to a compact surface group and a reductive group with connected centre. We find that the answer is a polynomial on residue classes (PORC). The key ingredients in the proof are Lusztig’s Jordan decomposition of complex characters of finite reductive groups and Deriziotis’s results on their genus numbers. As a consequence of our main theorem, we obtain an expression for the E-polynomial of the character stack.

We study the symplectic leaves of the subvariety of fixed points of an automorphism of a Calogero–Moser space induced by an element of finite order of the normalizer of the associated complex reflection group. We give a parametrization à la Harish-Chandra of its symplectic leaves (generalizing earlier works of Bellamy and Losev). This result is inspired by the mysterious relations between the geometry of Calogero–Moser spaces and unipotent representations of finite reductive groups, which is the theme of another paper, C. Bonnafé [‘Calogero–Moser spaces vs unipotent representations’, Pure Appl. Math. Q., to appear, Preprint, 2021, arXiv:2112.13684].

Let q be an odd prime power and suppose that $a,b\in \mathbb {F}_q$ are such that $ab$ and $(1{-}a)(1{-}b)$ are nonzero squares. Let $Q_{a,b} = (\mathbb {F}_q,*)$ be the quasigroup in which the operation is defined by $u*v=u+a(v{-}u)$ if $v-u$ is a square, and $u*v=u+b(v{-}u)$ if $v-u$ is a nonsquare. This quasigroup is called maximally nonassociative if it satisfies $x*(y*z) = (x*y)*z \Leftrightarrow x=y=z$. Denote by $\sigma (q)$ the number of $(a,b)$ for which $Q_{a,b}$ is maximally nonassociative. We show that there exist constants $\alpha \approx 0.029\,08$ and $\beta \approx 0.012\,59$ such that if $q\equiv 1 \bmod 4$, then $\lim \sigma (q)/q^2 = \alpha $, and if $q \equiv 3 \bmod 4$, then $\lim \sigma (q)/q^2 = \beta $.

For every $k \geq 2$ and $n \geq 2$, we construct n pairwise homotopically inequivalent simply connected, closed $4k$-dimensional manifolds, all of which are stably diffeomorphic to one another. Each of these manifolds has hyperbolic intersection form and is stably parallelisable. In dimension four, we exhibit an analogous phenomenon for spin$^{c}$ structures on $S^2 \times S^2$. For $m\geq 1$, we also provide similar $(4m-1)$-connected $8m$-dimensional examples, where the number of homotopy types in a stable diffeomorphism class is related to the order of the image of the stable J-homomorphism $\pi _{4m-1}(SO) \to \pi ^s_{4m-1}$.

A group is boundedly acyclic if its bounded cohomology with trivial real coefficients vanishes in all positive degrees. Amenable groups are boundedly acyclic, while the first nonamenable examples are the group of compactly supported homeomorphisms of $ {\mathbb {R}}^{n}$ (Matsumoto–Morita) and mitotic groups (Löh). We prove that binate (alias pseudo-mitotic) groups are boundedly acyclic, which provides a unifying approach to the aforementioned results. Moreover, we show that binate groups are universally boundedly acyclic. We obtain several new examples of boundedly acyclic groups as well as computations of the bounded cohomology of certain groups acting on the circle. In particular, we discuss how these results suggest that the bounded cohomology of the Thompson groups F, T, and V is as simple as possible.

Let H be an ultraspherical hypergroup and let $A(H)$ be the Fourier algebra associated with $H.$ In this paper, we study the dual and the double dual of $A(H).$ We prove among other things that the subspace of all uniformly continuous functionals on $A(H)$ forms a $C^*$-algebra. We also prove that the double dual $A(H)^{\ast \ast }$ is neither commutative nor semisimple with respect to the Arens product, unless the underlying hypergroup H is finite. Finally, we study the unit elements of $A(H)^{\ast \ast }.$

We prove an incidence result counting the k-rich $\delta $-tubes induced by a well-spaced set of $\delta $-atoms. Our result coincides with the bound that would be heuristically predicted by the Szemerédi–Trotter theorem and holds in all dimensions $d \geq 2$. We also prove an analogue of Beck’s theorem for $\delta $-atoms and $\delta $-tubes as an application of our result.

We consider a subshift of finite type on q symbols with a union of t cylinders based at words of identical length p as the hole. We explore the relationship between the escape rate into the hole and a rational function, $r(z)$, of correlations between forbidden words in the subshift with the hole. In particular, we prove that there exists a constant $D(t,p)$ such that if $q>D(t,p)$, then the escape rate is faster into the hole when the value of the corresponding rational function $r(z)$ evaluated at $D(t,p)$ is larger. Further, we consider holes which are unions of cylinders based at words of identical length, having zero cross-correlations, and prove that the escape rate is faster into the hole with larger Poincaré recurrence time. Our results are more general than the existing ones known for maps conjugate to a full shift with a single cylinder as the hole.

We extend the Burger–Mozes theory of closed, nondiscrete, locally quasiprimitive automorphism groups of locally finite, connected graphs to the semiprimitive case, and develop a generalization of Burger–Mozes universal groups acting on the regular tree $T_{d}$ of degree $d\in \mathbb {N}_{\ge 3}$. Three applications are given. First, we characterize the automorphism types that the quasicentre of a nondiscrete subgroup of $\operatorname {\mathrm {Aut}}(T_{d})$ may feature in terms of the group’s local action. In doing so, we explicitly construct closed, nondiscrete, compactly generated subgroups of $\operatorname {\mathrm {Aut}}(T_{d})$ with nontrivial quasicentre, and see that the Burger–Mozes theory does not extend further to the transitive case. We then characterize the $(P_{k})$-closures of locally transitive subgroups of $\operatorname {\mathrm {Aut}}(T_{d})$ containing an involutive inversion, and thereby partially answer two questions by Banks et al. [‘Simple groups of automorphisms of trees determined by their actions on finite subtrees’, J. Group Theory 18(2) (2015), 235–261]. Finally, we offer a new view on the Weiss conjecture.

For every group G, the set $\mathcal {P}(G)$ of its subsets forms a semiring under set-theoretical union $\cup $ and element-wise multiplication $\cdot $, and forms an involution semigroup under $\cdot $ and element-wise inversion ${}^{-1}$. We show that if the group G is finite, non-Dedekind, and solvable, neither the semiring $(\mathcal {P}(G),\cup ,\cdot )$ nor the involution semigroup $(\mathcal {P}(G),\cdot ,{}^{-1})$ admits a finite identity basis. We also solve the finite basis problem for the semiring of Hall relations over any finite set.

The main purpose of this paper is to prove Hörmander’s $L^p$–$L^q$ boundedness of Fourier multipliers on commutative hypergroups. We carry out this objective by establishing the Paley inequality and Hausdorff–Young–Paley inequality for commutative hypergroups. We show the $L^p$–$L^q$ boundedness of the spectral multipliers for the generalised radial Laplacian by examining our results on Chébli–Trimèche hypergroups. As a consequence, we obtain embedding theorems and time asymptotics for the $L^p$–$L^q$ norms of the heat kernel for generalised radial Laplacian.

Homotopy theory folklore tells us that the sheaf defining the cohomology theory $\operatorname {\mathrm {Tmf}}$ of topological modular forms is unique up to homotopy. Here we provide a proof of this fact, although we claim no originality for the statement. This retroactively reconciles all previous constructions of $\operatorname {\mathrm {Tmf}}$.

This article studies the properties of word-hyperbolic semigroups and monoids, that is, those having context-free multiplication tables with respect to a regular combing, as defined by Duncan and Gilman [‘Word hyperbolic semigroups’, Math. Proc. Cambridge Philos. Soc. 136(3) (2004), 513–524]. In particular, the preservation of word-hyperbolicity under taking free products is considered. Under mild conditions on the semigroups involved, satisfied, for example, by monoids or regular semigroups, we prove that the semigroup free product of two word-hyperbolic semigroups is again word-hyperbolic. Analogously, with a mild condition on the uniqueness of representation for the identity element, satisfied, for example, by groups, we prove that the monoid free product of two word-hyperbolic monoids is word-hyperbolic. The methods are language-theoretically general, and apply equally well to semigroups, monoids or groups with a $\mathbf {C}$-multiplication table, where $\mathbf {C}$ is any reversal-closed super-$\operatorname {\mathrm {AFL}}$. In particular, we deduce that the free product of two groups with $\mathbf {ET0L}$ with respect to indexed multiplication tables again has an $\mathbf {ET0L}$ with respect to an indexed multiplication table.

We show that the properties of being rationally K-stable passes from the fibres of a continuous $C(X)$-algebra to the ambient algebra, under the assumption that the underlying space X is compact, metrizable, and of finite covering dimension. As an application, we show that a crossed product C*-algebra is (rationally) K-stable provided the underlying C*-algebra is (rationally) K-stable, and the action has finite Rokhlin dimension with commuting towers.
