page 98 note * Second difference formulas involving , and both for 3 and 4 lives were tested to see if they would give better results than (9) and (10) where x + n = 70. For x =30 or 40 the results by the second difference formulæ are very much better, while for x=50 or 60 there is not much difference in the numerical errors in the results compared with those in (9) and (10).
