I am sad to announce the death of Dell Hymes, Founding Editor of Language in Society, on November 13, 2009. There will be a memorial to Hymes in a forthcoming issue.

Readers will notice that the journal’s masthead has changed. I am happy to welcome four new members to the Editorial Board, beginning in January, 2010: Cynthia Gordon (Syracuse University, USA), Scott F. Kiesling (University of Pittsburgh, USA), Miriam Meyerhoff (Edinburgh University, UK), and Tanya Stivers (Max Planck Institute, Nijmegen, The Netherlands). I am very grateful to outgoing Editorial Board members Yael Maschler, Douglas Maynard, Christina Bratt Paulston, and Carmen Silva-Corvalán, whose terms ended at the end of 2009. They have been a great help.
