CLASSIFICATION OF FINAL-INSTAR LARVAE OF THE ICHNEUMONINAE (HYMENOPTERA: ICHNEUMONIDAE)

Abstract

Characteristics of cephalic structures, spiracles, and skins of final-instar larvae of 42 species of 24 genera of the subfamily Ichneumoninae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) are described and illustrated and keys are given for the separation of tribes, genera, and species. An additional two species that were previously described and illustrated are included in the keys for a total of 44.Larval characteristics support most of the tribal, generic, and specific entities defined on the basis of adult characteristics. They place species of the tribe Phaeogenini as the most primitive and suggest a close relationship between them and species of the tribe Gyrodontini. There is no obvious close relationship between larvae of the tribe Platylabini and other tribes of the subfamily. The tribe Ichneumonini appears to be a relatively distinct group, although the inclusion of the genus Syspasis is questioned. The two subtribes, Trogusina and Callajoppina, of the tribe Trogusini are quite distinct from each other and from other groups of the Ichneumoninae; they appear to possibly have different origins, and perhaps each deserves tribal rank. There is a high degree of taxonomic congruence between the adult and larval classifications.

Les caractéristiques des structures céphaliques, des stigmates et des téguments du dernier stade larvaire de 42 espèces de 24 genres de la sous-famille Ichneumoninae (Hymenoptera : Ichneumonidae) sont décrites et illustrées et des clés sont données afin de distinguer tribus, genres et espèces. Deux espèces en plus de celles précédemment décrites et illustrées sont inclues dans les clés, ce qui totalise 44 espèces.

Les caractères des larves renforcent la plupart des traits des tribus, genres et espèces déjà définis par les caractères des adultes. Ils placent les espèces de la tribu Phaeogenini comme étant les plus primitives et suggèrent une étroite relation entre celles-ci et les espèces de la tribu Gyrodontini. Il ne semble pas y avoir de liens étroits entre les larves de la tribu Platylabini et d'autres tribus de la sous-famille. La tribu Ichneumonini paraît être un groupe relativement à part, bien que l'inclusion du genre Syspasis est mise en question. Les deux sous-tribus, Trogusina et Callajoppina, de la tribu Trogusini sont bien distinctes l'une de l'autre ainsi que d'autres groupes des Ichneumoninae; ils paraissent avoir, semble-t-il, des origines différentes, et devraient peut-être être classés comme tribus. Un haut niveau d'accord taxonomique est trouvé entre les classifications des adultes et des larves.
