The new mineral feynmanite, Na(UO2)(SO4)(OH)·3.5H2O, was found in both the Blue Lizard and Markey mines, San Juan County, Utah, USA, where it occurs as a secondary phase on pyrite-rich asphaltum in association with chinleite-(Y), gypsum, goethite, natrojarosite, natrozippeite, plášilite, shumwayite (Blue Lizard) and wetherillite (Markey). The mineral is pale greenish yellow with a white streak and fluoresces bright greenish white under a 405 nm laser. Crystals are transparent with a vitreous lustre. It is brittle, with a Mohs hardness of ~2, irregular fracture and one perfect cleavage on {010}. The calculated density is 3.324 g cm–3. Crystals are thin needles or blades, flattened on {010} and elongate on [100], exhibiting the forms {010}, {001}, {101} and {10$\bar{1}$}, and are up to ~0.1 mm in length. Feynmanite is optically biaxial (–), with α = 1.534(2), β = 1.561(2) and γ = 1.571(2) (white light); 2Vmeas. = 62(2)°; no dispersion; and optical orientation: X = b, Y ≈ a,Z ≈ c. It is weakly pleochroic: X = colourless, Y = very pale green yellow and Z = pale green yellow (X < Y < Z). Electron microprobe analyses (WDS mode) provided (Na0.84Fe0.01)(U1.01O2)(S1.01O4)(OH)·3.5H2O. The five strongest powder X-ray diffraction lines are [dobs Å(I)(hkl)]: 8.37(100)(010), 6.37(33)($\bar{1}$01,101), 5.07(27)($\bar{1}$11,111), 4.053(46)(004,021) and 3.578(34)(120). Feynmanite is monoclinic, has space group P2/n, a = 6.927(3), b = 8.355(4), c = 16.210(7) Å, β = 90.543(4)°, V = 938.1(7) Å3 and Z = 4. The structure of feynmanite (R1 = 0.0371 for 1879 Io > 2σI) contains edge-sharing pairs of pentagonal bipyramids that are linked by sharing corners with SO4 groups, yielding a [(UO2)2(SO4)2(OH)2]2– sheet based on the phosphuranylite anion topology. The sheet is topologically identical to those in deliensite, johannite and plášilite. The dehydration of feynmanite to plášilite results in interlayer collapse involving geometric reconfiguration of the sheets and the ordering of Na.

The Cape Cross–Uis pegmatite belt, Damara Orogen, north-central Namibia hosts multiple Ta–Nb- and Sn-oxide-bearing pegmatites. Columbite-group minerals, tapiolite, cassiterite and minor ixiolite and wodginite occur in abundance within pegmatites and display various compositional and internal structural mineralogical variations. Ta–Nb oxides display various zonation patterns indicative of multiple crystallisation phases, whereas cassiterite is dominantly homogeneous with minor euhedral columbite-group mineral inclusions. Ta–Nb oxides are mostly rich in Fe, with fractionation patterns in the columbite quadrilateral being sub parallel to the Ta/(Ta + Nb) axis; increasing Ta/(Ta + Nb) with little change in Mn/(Mn + Fe), which is consistent with classical trends in beryl-to-spodumene rare-element pegmatites. In addition, these trends suggest that co-crystallising minerals compete with Ta–Nb oxides for elements such as Mn, preventing Ta–Nb oxides from attaining Mn-rich compositions during the fractionation process. Cassiterite shows similar fractionation patterns with Fe > Mn and notable increases in the Ta content. Minor-element substitution in Ta–Nb oxides shows sharp decreases with increasing fractionation supporting the hypothesis that newly stabilised co-occurring minerals compete with columbite-group minerals for certain elements. Tapiolite shows the same minor-element trend, however, only for Sn and Ti suggesting cassiterite was a dominant competing mineral. Although crystallisation of Ta–Nb oxides from an aqueous fluid at the late-stages of pegmatite genesis is highly debated, significantly elevated Ta contents in metasomatised country rock, compared to unaltered country rock, may give new insight, suggesting that Ta may indeed partition into, and be transported by, an exsolved aqueous fluid. However, further studies of the country rock metasomatic contacts are required as currently the dataset is limited. The degree of fractionation as depicted by Ta–Nb and Sn oxides within pegmatites, indicate that a zonation from primitive to evolved pegmatites surrounding granites is not present and that pegmatites are probably not related to granites in the typical parent–daughter relationship.

Schmidite, Zn(Fe3+0.5Mn2+0.5)2ZnFe3+(PO4)3(OH)3(H2O)8 and wildenauerite, Zn(Fe3+0.5Mn2+0.5)2Mn2+Fe3+(PO4)3(OH)3(H2O)8 are two new oxidised schoonerite-group minerals from the Hagendorf-Süd pegmatite, Hagendorf, Oberpfalz, Bavaria, Germany. Schmidite occurs as radiating sprays of orange–brown to copper-red laths on and near to altered phosphophyllite in a corroded triphylite nodule, whereas wildenauerite forms dense compacts of red laths, terminating Zn-bearing rockbridgeite. The minerals are biaxial (+) with α = 1.642(2), β = 1.680(1), γ = 1.735(2) and 2Vmeas = 81.4(8)° for schmidite, and with α = 1.659(3), β = 1.687(3), γ = 1.742(3) and 2Vmeas = 73(1)° for wildenauerite. Electron microprobe analyses, with H2O from thermal analysis and FeO/Fe2O3 from Mössbauer spectroscopy, gave FeO 0.4, MgO 0.3, Fe2O3 23.5, MnO 9.0, ZnO 15.5, P2O5 27.6, H2O 23.3, total 99.6 wt.% for schmidite, and FeO 0.7, MgO 0.3, Fe2O3 25.2, MnO 10.7, ZnO 11.5, P2O5 27.2, H2O 24.5, total 100.1 wt.% for wildenauerite. The empirical formulae, scaled to 3 P and with OH– adjusted for charge balance are Zn1.47Mn2+0.98Mg0.05Fe2+0.04Fe3+2.27(PO4)3(OH)2.89(H2O)8.54 for schmidite and Zn1.11Mn2+1.18Mg0.05Fe2+0.08Fe3+2.47(PO4)3(OH)3.25(H2O)9.03 for wildenauerite. The two minerals have orthorhombic symmetry, space group Pmab and Z = 4. The unit-cell parameters from refinement of powder X-ray diffraction data are a = 11.059(1), b = 25.452(1) and c = 6.427(1) Å for schmidite, and a = 11.082(1), b = 25.498(2) and c = 6.436(1) Å for wildenauerite. The crystal structures of schmidite and wildenauerite differ from that of schoonerite in having minor partitioning of Zn from the [5]Zn site to an adjacent vacant tetrahedral site [4]Zn, separated by ~1.0 Å from [5]Zn. The two minerals are distinguished by the cation occupancies in the octahedral M1 to M3 sites. Schmidite has M1 = M2 = (Fe3+0.5Mn2+0.5) and M3 = Zn and wildenauerite has M1 = M2 = (Fe3+0.5Mn2+0.5) and M3 = Mn2+.

The phase transitions involving calcite (CaCO3-I), CaCO3-II, CaCO3-III and CaCO3-IIIb were investigated using a diamond anvil cell and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Based on the results obtained from in situ observations and Raman measurements made with six natural calcite crystals, the phase transition from calcite to CaCO3-II took place between 1.56 and 1.67 GPa under ambient temperature. Under a precise pressure of 1.97 ± 0.03 GPa, three CaCO3 samples were observed to transform from CaCO3-II directly to CaCO3-III, while in the other three samples both CaCO3-III and CaCO3-IIIb crystal structures were detected. Transformation from CaCO3-IIIb to CaCO3-III was completed in a short period in one sample, whereas in the other two samples coexistence of CaCO3-III and CaCO3-IIIb was observed over a wide pressure range from 1.97 to 3.38 GPa, with sluggish transformation from CaCO3-IIIb to CaCO3-III being observed after the samples were preserved under 3.38 GPa for 72 h. Hence, it can be concluded that CaCO3-IIIb is a metastable intermediate phase occurring during the reconstructive transformation from CaCO3-II to CaCO3-III. Splitting of the C–O in-plane bending (ν4) and symmetric stretching (ν1) vibrations and appearance of new lattice vibrations in the Raman spectra of CaCO3-III and CaCO3-IIIb suggest a lowering in crystal symmetry during the transformation from CaCO3-II through CaCO3-IIIb to CaCO3-III, which is in good agreement with the observed sequence of phase symmetries.

The crystal structure of a murmanite-related mineral (MRM) of the murmanite group (seidozerite supergroup), ideally Na2CaTi4(Si2O7)2O4(H2O)4, from Mt. Pyalkimpor, the Lovozero alkaline massif, Kola Peninsula, Russia, was refined in space group P$ {\bar 1} $ with a = 5.363(2), b = 7.071(2), c = 12.176(5) Å, α = 92.724(3), β = 107.542(7), γ = 90.13(2)°, V = 439.7(4) Å3 and R1 = 5.72%. On the basis of electron-microprobe analysis, the empirical formula calculated on 22 (O + F), with two constraints derived from structure refinement, OH = 0.11 per formula unit (pfu) and H2O = 3.89 pfu, is (Na2.12K0.07Sr0.01)Σ2.20Ca0.85(Ti3.01Nb0.39Mn0.20Fe2+0.19Mg0.17Zr0.01Al0.01)Σ3.98(Si4.20O14)[O3.90F0.10]Σ4[(H2O)3.89(OH)0.11]Σ4{P0.03}, with Z = 1. It seems unlikely that {P0.03} belongs to MRM itself. The crystal structure of MRM is an array of TS blocks (Titanium-Silicate) connected via hydrogen bonds. The TS block consists of HOH sheets (H = heteropolyhedral, O = octahedral) parallel to (001). In the O sheet, the Ti-dominant MO1 site and Ca-dominant MO2 site give ideally (Ca□)Ti2 pfu. In the H sheet, the Ti-dominant MH site and Na-dominant AP site give ideally Na2Ti2 pfu. The MH and AP polyhedra and Si2O7 groups constitute the H sheet. The ideal structural formula of MRM of the form AP2MH2MO4(Si2O7)2(XOM,A)4(XOA)2(XPM,A)4 is Na2Ti2(Ca□)Ti2(Si2O7)2O4(H2O)4. MRM is a Ca-rich and Na-poor analogue of murmanite, ideally Na2Ti2Na2Ti2(Si2O7)2O4(H2O)4 and a Na-rich and (OH)-poor analogue of calciomurmanite, ideally (Ca□)Ti2(Na□)Ti2(Si2O7)2O2[O(OH)](H2O)4. MRM and (murmanite and calciomurmanite) are related by the following substitutions: O(Ca2+□)MRM ↔ O(Na+2)mur and O(Ca2+□)MRM + H(Na+2)MRM + O(O2–)MRM ↔ O(Na+□)cal + H(Ca2+□)cal + O[(OH)–]cal. MRM is a possible new mineral of the murmanite group (seidozerite supergroup) where Ti + Mn + Mg = 4 apfu.

An unusual occurrence of asbestiform sepiolite, filling veins in the antigorite serpentinites of the Voltri Unit exposed in a borrow pit (now reclaimed) in the Deiva forest, near Sassello, NW Italy, was investigated with an in-depth analytical approach aimed at studying its crystal-chemistry and structure and evaluating its possible hazards for human health. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (energy-dispersive spectroscopy mode) proved that these sepiolite fibres, apparently up to several cm long, are made up of bundles of thinner fibrils (or laths: average length > 100 µm; thickness ≈ 80 nm), with a composition consistent to that reported in the literature. The dehydration process was monitored through thermo-gravimetric analyses and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, performed at increasing T; the latter, in particular, showed the presence of moderate amounts of aliphatic hydrocarbons – not yet identified thoroughly – associated with the sample. The crystal structure refinement with the Rietveld method showed no relevant difference from the literature models, although a peculiar distribution of zeolitic H2O molecules was observed. The geological context suggests that the Sassello sepiolite precipitated from hydrothermal fluids, which were saturated in Mg and silica by the interaction of the host serpentinites. The same setting favoured formation of abiotic hydrocarbons, by means of the Fischer–Tropsch reaction. The extremely long and flexible fibrils (length/width aspect ratio >> 3) of this sepiolite specimen could represent a serious hazard for human health if air dispersed and inhaled; also, its atypical association with hydrocarbons (only reported once previously) might even favour further fragmentation in thinner units.

The new mineral novograblenovite, (NH4,K)MgCl3·6H2O, was found on basaltic lava from the 2012–2013 Tolbachik fissure eruption at the Plosky Tolbachik volcano, Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. It occurs as prismatic, needle-like transparent crystals together with gypsum and halite. Novograblenovite was formed due to the exposure of the host rocks to eruptive gas exhalations enriched in HCl and NH3. Basalt was the source of potassium and magnesium for the mineral formation. Novograblenovite crystallises in the monoclinic space group C2/c, with unit-cell parameters a = 9.2734(3) Å, b = 9.5176(3) Å, c = 13.2439(4) Å, β = 90.187(2)°, V = 1168.91(2) Å3 and Z = 4. The five strongest reflections in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [dobs, Å (I, %) (h k l)] are: 3.330 (100) (2 2 0), 2.976 (45) ($\bar{1}\; 1\; 4$), 2.353 (29) ($\bar {2}\; 2\; 4$), 3.825 (26) (2 0 2), 1.997 (25) ($\overline {4\; 2} $ 2). The density calculated from the empirical formula and the X-ray data is 1.504 g cm–3. The mineral is biaxial (+) with α = 1.469(2), β = 1.479(2) and γ = 1.496(2) (λ = 589 nm); 2Vmeas. = 80(10)° and 2Vcalc. = 75.7°. The crystal structure (solved and refined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, R1 = 0.0423) is based on the perovskite-like network of (NH4,K)Cl6-octahedra sharing chlorine vertices, and comprises [Mg(H2O)6]2+ groups in framework channels. The positions of all independent H atoms were obtained by difference-Fourier techniques and refined isotropically. All oxygen, nitrogen and chlorine atoms are involved in the system of hydrogen bonding, acting as donors or acceptors. The formula resulting from the structure refinement is [(NH4)0.7K0.3]MgCl3·6H2O. The mineral is named after Prokopiy Trifonovich Novograblenov, one of the researchers of Kamchatka Peninsula, a teacher, naturalist, geographer and geologist.

Agmantinite, ideally Ag2MnSnS4, is a new mineral from the Uchucchacua polymetallic deposit, Oyon district, Catajambo, Lima Department, Peru. It occurs as orange–red crystals up to 100 μm across. Agmantinite is translucent with adamantine lustre and possesses a red streak. It is brittle. Neither fracture nor cleavage were observed. Based on the empirical formula the calculated density is 4.574 g/cm3. On the basis of chemically similar compounds the Mohs hardness is estimated at between 2 to 2½. In plane-polarised light agmantinite is white with red internal reflections. It is weakly bireflectant with no observable pleochroism with red internal reflections. Between crossed polars, agmantinite is weakly anisotropic with reddish brown to greenish grey rotation tints. The reflectances (Rmin and Rmax) for the four standard wavelengths are: 19.7 and 22.0 (470 nm); 20.5 and 23.2 (546 nm); 21.7 and 2.49 (589 nm); and 20.6 and 23.6 (650 nm), respectively.

Agmantinite is orthorhombic, space group P21nm, with unit-cell parameters: a = 6.632(2), b = 6.922(2), c = 8.156(2) Å, V = 374.41(17) Å3, a:b:c 0.958:1:1.178 and Z = 2. The crystal structure was refined to R = 0.0575 for 519 reflections with I > 2σ(I). Agmantinite is the first known mineral of ${M}_{\rm 2}^{\rm I} $MIIMIVS4 type that is derived from wurtzite rather than sphalerite by ordered substitution of Zn, analogous to the substitution pattern for deriving stannite from sphalerite. The six strongest X-ray powder-diffraction lines derived from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data [d in Å (intensity)] are: 3.51 (s), 3.32 (w), 3.11 (vs), 2.42 (w), 2.04 (m) and 1.88 (m). The empirical formula (based on 8 apfu) is (Ag1.94Cu0.03)Σ1.97(Mn0.98Zn0.05)Σ1.03Sn0.97S4.03.The crystal structure-derived formula is Ag2(Mn0.69Zn0.31)Σ1.00SnS4 and the simplified formula is Ag2MnSnS4.

The name is for the composition and the new mineral and mineral name have been approved by the International Mineralogical Association Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (IMA2014-083).

K-rich nepheline with a structural formula of A2B6T14T24T34T44O32 (Z = 1) within melilite–olivine nephelinite from Hamada, Shimane Prefecture, Japan, was investigated to clarify its crystal structure and to determine cation distributions in the A and B structural positions of structural channels and tetrahedral T1–T4 sites. The chemical formula of a single-crystal sample was (Na5.437K2.248Mg0.034Ca0.031)Σ7.750(Si8.332Al7.445Fe3+0.158Ti0.009Cr0.005)Σ15.949O32, which results in 65.2, 27.8, 2.1, 3.2 and 1.6 mol.% NaAlSiO4, KAlSiO4, NaFe3+SiO4, □Si2O4 and □0.5(Ca,Mg)0.5AlSiO4 end-member components, respectively, where □ is a vacancy. X-ray diffraction data of a single crystal with dimensions of 0.28 mm × 0.15 mm × 0.05 mm measured at 296 K indicate the space group P63. In the structural refinement, the R1 factor was reduced to 3.69% by taking twinning by merohedry into the refinement. The refinement accounted for 77.7% of the absolute structure and 22.3% of the a and b axes reversed absolute structure. The atomic populations determined in the A and B positions were 1.834 K + 0.166 □ and 5.705 Na + 0.198 K + 0.031 Ca + 0.034 Mg, respectively, implying the substitution of K for Na in the B position. The a and c dimensions are a = 10.0270(3) and c = 8.4027(3) Å. The average <A–O> and <B–O> distances are 3.009 and 2.65 Å, respectively. The substitution of K for Na in the B channel results in increased volume and bond-length distortion of the BO8 polyhedra, which then reduces distortion of the AO9 polyhedra. The average T–O distances indicate that the T1 and T4 sites are essentially filled with Al, whereas the T2 and T3 are filled with Si. Despite the deviation of the O1 oxygen from the triad axis and the combination of K+ ions and vacancies in the hexagonal channels, an incommensurate structure was not observed in the X-ray diffraction data or using the electron diffraction technique.

Frenchvale quarry, once mined for dolomitic marble, contains pink corundum-bearing, quartz-free/-poor, feldspathic gneiss that is unusually sodic (~7% wt.% Na2O) and iron-poor (~0.6 wt.% Fe2O3), but has silica, alumina and immobile trace-element contents resembling those of suspended fluvial particulate matter (e.g. in the Congo River). The protolith of the gneiss, interpreted as a fine-grained clastic sediment deposited offshore, evidently was albitised prior to deformation and regional metamorphism. Variably-altered gneiss samples show a narrow range of δ18OVSMOW values (8.1 to 10.7‰) and no systematic differences in bulk O isotope composition as a function of alteration intensity. With the exception of an extensively fuchsitised zone adjacent to a thick (1.2 m), cross-cutting quartz vein that contains H2O–NaCl+CO2+CH4-bearing fluid inclusions, the O isotope data do not support interaction of the gneiss with an externally-derived fluid phase except at low fluid:rock ratio, even where granodiorite occurs in direct contact with the gneiss. Fluid inclusions in the quartz vein have bulk $X_{{\rm H}_2{\rm O}}$, $X_{{\rm C}{\rm O}_{\rm 2}}$ and $X_{{\rm C}{\rm H}_{\rm 4}}$ values (in mol.%) of 99.60, 0.14 and 0.26, respectively, as determined by gas chromatography. Although the protolith of the gneiss was associated with carbonate platformal rocks (now marble), corundum is confined to the feldspathic rocks. These feldspathic rocks lack calc-silicate minerals; they are not skarns. As such, they are distinct from well-known Himalayan sapphire and ruby deposits cited previously as analogues of the Frenchvale corundum occurrence.

Brandãoite, [BeAl2(PO4)2(OH)2(H2O)4](H2O), is a new Be–Al phosphate mineral from the João Firmino mine, Pomarolli farm region, Divino das Laranjeiras County, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, where it occurs in an albite pocket with other secondary phosphates, including beryllonite, atencioite and zanazziite, in a granitic pegmatite. It occurs as colourless acicular crystals <10 µm wide and <100 µm long that form compact radiating spherical aggregates up to 1.0–1.5 mm across. It is colourless and transparent in single crystals and white in aggregates, has a white streak and a vitreous lustre, is brittle and has conchoidal fracture. Mohs hardness is 6, and the calculated density is 2.353 g/cm3. Brandãoite is biaxial (+), α = 1.544, β = 1.552 and γ = 1.568, all ± 0.002; 2Vobs = 69.7(10)° and 2Vcalc = 71.2°. No pleochroism was observed. Brandãoite is triclinic, space group P$\bar{1}$, a = 6.100(4), b = 8.616(4), c = 10.261(5) Å, α = 93.191(11), β = 95.120(11), γ = 96.863(11)°, V = 532.1(8) Å3 and Z = 2. Chemical analysis of a 4 µm wide needle-shaped crystal by electron microprobe and secondary-ion mass spectrometry gave P2O5 = 28.42, Al2O3 = 20.15, BeO = 4.85, H2O = 21.47 and sum = 74.89 wt.%. The empirical formula, normalised on the basis of 15 anions pfu with (OH) = 2 and (H2O) = 5 apfu (from the crystal structure) is Be0.98Al1.99P2.02H12O15. The crystal structure was solved by direct methods and refined to an R1 index of 7.0%. There are two P sites occupied by P5+, two Al sites occupied by octahedrally coordinated Al3+, and one Be site occupied by tetrahedrally coordinated Be2+. There are fifteen anions, two of which are (OH) groups and five of which are (H2O) groups. The simplified ideal formula is thus [BeAl2(PO4)2(OH)2(H2O)4](H2O) with Z = 2. Beryllium and P tetrahedra share corners to form a four-membered ring. Aluminium octahedra share a common vertex to form an [Al2φ11] dimer, and these dimers are cross-linked by P tetrahedra to form a complex slab of polyhedra parallel to (001). These slabs are cross-linked by BeO2(OH)(H2O) tetrahedra, with interstitial (H2O) groups in channels that extend along [100].

Hydrotalcite, ideally [Mg6Al2(OH)16](CO3)(H2O)4, was studied in samples from Dypingdal, Snarum, Norway (3R and 2H), Zelentsovskaya pit (2H) and Praskovie–Evgenievskaya pit (2H) (both Southern Urals, Russia), Talnakh, Siberia, Russia (3R), Khibiny, Kola, Russia (3R), and St. Lawrence, New York, USA (3R and 2H). Two polytypes, 3R and 2H (both ‘classical’), were confirmed on the basis of single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction data. Their chemical composition was studied by electron-microprobe analysis, infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The crystal structure of hydrotalcite-3R was solved by direct methods in the space group R$ {\bar 3} $m on three crystals (two data collections at 290 K and one at 120 K). The unit-cell parameters are as follows (290/290/120 K): a = 3.0728(9)/3.0626(3)/3.0617(4), c = 23.326(9)/23.313(3)/23.203(3) Å and V = 190.7(1)/189.37(4)/188.36(4) Å3. The crystal structures were refined on the basis of 304/150/101 reflections to R1 = 0.075/0.041/0.038. Hydrotalcite-2H crystallises in the P63/mmc space group; unit-cell parameters for two crystals are (data collection at 290 K and 93 K): a = 3.046(1)/3.0521(9), c = 15.447(6)/15.439(4) Å, V = 124.39(8)/124.55(8) Å3. The crystal structures were refined on the basis of 160/142 reflections to R1 = 0.077/0.059. This paper reports the first single-crystal structure data on hydrotalcite. Hydrotalcite distribution in Nature, diagnostic features, polytypism, interlayer topology and localisation of M2+–M3+ cations within metal hydroxide layers are discussed.

Agates with spectacular micro-structural features were found in volcanic rocks at several occurrences in the Saar-Nahe region (Germany). These agates include spirals of several tens up to several hundreds of μm in size within zones lacking the characteristic structural agate banding. A combined mineralogical study by polarising microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, cathodoluminescence microscopy and spectroscopy, and electron backscatter diffraction provided evidence that the spirals consist of well-ordered trigonal α-quartz, whereas the surrounding matrix is composed of strongly disordered or amorphous SiO2 phases. The quartz micro-crystals show a systematic rotation of the crystal orientation perpendicular to the direction of the spiral loops indicating helical growth.

It is assumed that the spiral growth is initiated by dislocations with a screw component. The lacking symmetry of the strongly disordered or amorphous matrix initiated a curved development by a screw dislocation in a system far from equilibrium. The atoms/molecules are packed into spiral layers, which is energetically favoured in comparison with the incorporation into plane crystal faces. Such self-organisation growth and polymerisation initiated by a screw dislocation can produce variable spiral morphologies sometimes resembling living forms.

Tsangpoite, ideally Ca5(PO4)2(SiO4), the hexagonal polymorph of silicocarnotite, and matyhite, ideally Ca9(Ca0.5□0.5)Fe(PO4)7, the Fe-analogue of Ca-merrillite, were identified from the D'Orbigny angrite meteorite by electron probe microanalysis, electron microscopy and micro-Raman spectroscopy. On the basis of electron diffraction, the symmetry of tsangpoite was shown to be hexagonal, P63/m or P63, with a = 9.489(4) Å, c = 6.991(6) Å, V = 545.1(6) Å3 and Z = 2 for 12 oxygen atoms per formula unit, and that of matyhite was shown to be trigonal, R3c, with a = 10.456 (7) Å, c = 37.408(34) Å, V = 3541.6 (4.8) Å3 and Z = 6 for 28 oxygen atoms per formula unit. On the basis of their constant association with the grain-boundary assemblage: Fe sulfide + ulvöspinel + Al–Ti-bearing hedenbergite + fayalite–kirschsteinite intergrowth, the formation of tsangpoite and matyhite, along with kuratite (the Fe-analogue of rhönite), can be readily rationalised as crystallisation from residue magmas at the final stage of the D'Orbigny meteorite formation. Alternatively, the close petrographic relations between tsangpoite/matyhite and the resorbed Fe sulfide rimmed by fayalite + kirschsteinite symplectite, such as the nucleation of tsangpoite in association with magnetite ± other phases within Fe sulfide and the common outward growth of needle-like tsangpoite or plate-like matyhite from the fayalite–kirschsteinite symplectic rim of Fe sulfide into hedenbergite, infer that these new minerals and the grain-boundary assemblage might represent metasomatic products resulting from reactions between an intruding metasomatic agent and the porous olivine–plagioclase plate + fayalite-kirschsteinite overgrowth + augite + Fe sulfide aggregates. Still further thermochemical and kinetics evidence is required to clarify the exact formation mechanisms/conditions of the euhedral tsangpoite, matyhite and kuratite at the grain boundary of the D'Orbigny angrite.
