The ring and the street: young immigrant boxers in the Bolognina neighbourhood of Bologna

Abstract

This article describes the social organisation of the ‘Tranvieri' boxing gym in Bolognina, a working-class neighbourhood of Bologna that has been rapidly changing over the last 20 years due to the closure of factories and the arrival of immigrants, especially from the Maghreb. The gym population has changed accordingly: currently about two-thirds of those attending the gym as a leisure centre have immigrant parents. The author studied the everyday life of these young boxers, born in Italy but without citizenship, who visit the gym daily after finishing vocational school, work and family responsibilities. For them, boxing is not a solution to the frustration inflicted by a society they perceive as indifferent if not hostile towards them, but it does offer them the possibility of not being represented as persons excluded from that society.

L'articolo è frutto di una ricerca triennale (2008–2010) che ha avuto per oggetto le pratiche di vita quotidiane di un gruppo di pugili all'interno di una palestra storica del territorio della Bolognina, un quartiere nella prima periferia bolognese. Il saggio riprende alcuni dati emersi dallo studio triennale per rispondere alle domande di questo numero monografico descrivendo perché e come un gruppo di ragazzi di origine straniera tra il 2008 e il 2010 abbia scelto di trascorrere il tempo libero in questa palestra: la routine degli allenamenti, la lunga preparazione, inscindibilmente fisica e morale, che prelude ai combattimenti, i riti intimi della vita nella palestra e della comunità di pugili dilettanti che la attraversano quotidianamente, l'iniziazione alla particolarissima economia corporea, materiale e simbolica che governa il mondo del pugilato. Ma la palestra di boxe non è solo questo; la sua missione tecnica esplicita racchiude anche le funzioni extra-pugilistiche che essa svolge per coloro che la frequentano a dimostrazione di un legame sempre più forte, già a partire da quegli anni, tra il ring e la strada all'interno di un territorio popolare ed ex operaio come la Bolognina.
