I reached Nairobi on 29th December, 1950, and left on 4th May, 1951, after covering about 4,000 miles. With the exception of a visit to Dar-es-Salaam the whole of my time was spent in Kenya.

Two years have passed since Colonel J. A. B. Sandenbergh, the Warden of the Kruger National Park, launched a public appeal to provide water for the wild life of the park. Subscriptions were invited for two purposes: the first to provide boreholes so that in the dry season animals could find water within reach of their grazing, the second to form a general fund to build dams to retard the run-off of rain water.

The Mountain Zebra National Park.—The Mountain Zebra National Park was established with six Cape Mountain Zebras (only one of these a mare) on the 2nd July, 1937, by Proclamation No. 112 of 1937.

Although scattered and greatly reduced in numbers, Hartmann's Zebras (form(s) of Mountain Zebra) still seem to occur over practically the whole mountainous coastal region of South-West Africa, west of the Namib, from the Orange River in the south to beyond the Cunene in the north.

On 17th July, 1951, the Society had the great pleasure of hearing a talk by Mr. F. W. Champion upon the relation, in tropical forests, between scientific forestry and wild life preservation. Mr. Champion during his twenty-five years as a forest officer in India, became famous for his knowledge of the jungle animals. He was a pioneer of wild life photography in India and his books The Jungle in Sunlight and Shadow and With Camera in Tiger Land will be well known to members of our Society. After leaving India in 1947 Mr. Champion took up a post in the forest service of Tanganyika Territory, where he is still serving.

Around the turn of the twentieth century, North American conservationists embarked on an intensive campaign to prevent the Trumpeter Swan (Cygnus buccinator) from following the Passenger Pigeon into extinction.

The original proposal for a National Park in Malaya was put forward by the late Theodore Hubback in 1927. Subsequent correspondence in which the Society for the Preservation of the Fauna of the Empire was interested, paved the way for concrete suggestions contained in the Report of the Wild Life Commission of Malaya, published in 1932.

On 19th September there assembled at The Hague some 130 people of many nationalities with a common interest in problems of nature protection. Through the courtesy of the Netherlands authorities the meeting was held in the Rolzaal, an upper chamber of the fine old thirteenth century Ridderzaal, or Knights' Hall, in the centre of the Binnenhof.
