We propose an analytically tractable model of loading-dependent cascading failure that captures some of the salient features of large blackouts of electric power transmission systems. This leads to a new application and derivation of the quasibinomial distribution and its generalization to a saturating form with an extended parameter range. The saturating quasibinomial distribution of the number of failed components has a power-law region at a critical loading and a significant probability of total failure at higher loadings.

In this paper we discuss some properties of the reversed hazard rate function. This function has been shown to be useful in the analysis of data in the presence of left censored observations. It is also natural in discussing lifetimes with reversed time scale. In fact, ordinary hazard rate functions are most useful for lifetimes, and reverse hazard rates are natural if the time scale is reversed. Mixing up these concepts can often, although not always, lead to anomalies. For example, one result gives that if the reversed hazard rate function is increasing, its interval of support must be (—∞, b) where b is finite. Consequently nonnegative random variables cannot have increasing reversed hazard rates. Because of this result some existing results in the literature on the reversed hazard rate ordering require modification.

Reversed hazard rates are also important in the study of systems. Hazard rates have an affinity to series systems; reversed hazard rates seem more appropriate for studying parallel systems. Several results are given that demonstrate this. In studying systems, one problem is to relate derivatives of hazard rate functions and reversed hazard rate functions of systems to similar quantities for components. We give some results that address this. Finally, we carry out comparisons for k-out-of-n systems with respect to the reversed hazard rate ordering.

We consider the following queuing system which arises as a model of a wireless link shared by multiple users. There is a finite number N of input flows served by a server. The system operates in discrete time t = 0,1,2,…. Each input flow can be described as an irreducible countable Markov chain; waiting customers of each flow are placed in a queue. The sequence of server states m(t), t = 0,1,2,…, is a Markov chain with finite number of states M. When the server is in state m, it can serve μim customers of flow i (in one time slot).

The scheduling discipline is a rule that in each time slot chooses the flow to serve based on the server state and the state of the queues. Our main result is that a simple online scheduling discipline, Modified Largest Weighted Delay First, along with its generalizations, is throughput optimal; namely, it ensures that the queues are stable as long as the vector of average arrival rates is within the system maximum stability region.

Numerical inversion of Laplace transforms is a powerful tool in computational probability. It greatly enhances the applicability of stochastic models in many fields. In this article we present a simple Laplace transform inversion algorithm that can compute the desired function values for a much larger class of Laplace transforms than the ones that can be inverted with the known methods in the literature. The algorithm can invert Laplace transforms of functions with discontinuities and singularities, even if we do not know the location of these discontinuities and singularities a priori. The algorithm only needs numerical values of the Laplace transform, is extremely fast, and the results are of almost machine precision. We also present a two-dimensional variant of the Laplace transform inversion algorithm. We illustrate the accuracy and robustness of the algorithms with various numerical examples.

We consider queueing networks containing customers and signals that were recently introduced in Gelenbe [4]. Both customers and signals can be exogenous or can be obtained by a Markovian transition of a customer after service. A signal entering a queue forces a customer to move on to another queue according to a Markovian routing rule or to leave the network in batch mode. This synchronized or triggered motion is useful in representing the effect of tokens in Petri-nets, for systems in which customers and work can be instantaneously moved from one queue to the other on the arrival of a signal as well as for other network behaviors that are encountered in parallel computer system modelling. We show that this network has product form stationary solution and establish the non-linear customer flow equations that govern it. Network stability is discussed in this new context.

In view of the growing importance of reversed hazard rate (RHR) in reliability analysis and stochastic modeling, we have considered different implicative relationships with respect to the monotonic behavior of RHR. In that context, a few characterizing properties have also been presented based on expected inactivity time.

In this paper, we review some recent results on the stochastic comparison of order statistics and related statistics from independent and heterogeneous proportional hazard rates models, gamma variables, geometric variables, and negative binomial variables. We highlight the close connections that exist between some classical stochastic orders and majorization-type orders.

Let X1, … , Xn be independent random variables with Xi having survival function λi, i = 1, … , n, and let Y1, … ,Yn be a random sample with common population survival distribution , where = ∑i=1nλi/n. Let Xn:n and Yn:n denote the lifetimes of the parallel systems consisting of these components, respectively. It is shown that Xn:n is greater than Yn:n in terms of likelihood ratio order. It is also proved that the sample range Xn:n − X1:n is larger than Yn:n − Y1:n according to reverse hazard rate ordering. These two results strengthen and generalize the results in Dykstra, Kochar, and Rojo [6] and Kochar and Rojo [11], respectively.

In this paper we study a new variability order that is denoted by ≤st:icx. This order has important advantages over previous variability orders that have been introduced and studied in the literature. In particular, X ≤st:icxY implies that Var[h(X)] ≤ Var[h (Y)] for all increasing convex functions h. The new order is also closed under formations of increasing directionally convex functions; thus it follows that it is closed, in particular, under convolutions. These properties make this order useful in applications. Some sufficient conditions for X ≤st:icxY are described. For this purpose, a new order, called the excess wealth order, is introduced and studied. This new order is based on the excess wealth transform which, in turn, is related to the Lorenz curve and to the TTT (total time on test) transform. The relationships to these transforms are also studied in this paper. The main closure properties of the order ≤st:icx are derived, and some typical applications in queueing theory are described.

We prove necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of the stationary solution of the queueing networks (G-networks) with negative and positive customers introduced in Gelenbe [3], which have been shown to have product form. First, the existence of the solution of the nonlinear customer flow equations is established using Brouwer's fixed-point theorem; this result is valid for stable and unstable systems, as well as for certain networks that may not have product form. Then, the result is used to establish general stability related to the usual “load factor less than 1” criterion of queueing systems for G-networks with product form.

The lifetimes of the components of a device depend on each other because of their joint dependence on the environmental conditions. We introduce intrinsic age processes, one for each component, to handle such dependence. The data required can be obtained by experiments under controlled laboratory conditions. The computations needed for randomly varying conditions are recursive and can be used for making decisions regarding maintenance and replacement.

Interconnections between occurrence times of nonhomogeneous Poisson processes, record values, minimal repair times, and the relevation transform are explained. A number of properties of the distributions of occurrence times and interoccurrence times of a nonhomogeneous Poisson process are proved when the mean-value function of the process is convex, starshaped, or superadditive. The same results hold for upper record values of independently identically distributed random variables from IFR, IFRA, and NBU distributions.

We wish to schedule heterogeneous jobs on a single machine to stochastically maximize the number of jobs that are correctly completed before a random due date. Jobs arrive according to an arbitrary arrival process. Job i has probability ci, that it will be correctly completed, and a processing time that has distribution Fi. Jobs that are incorrectly processed cannot be reprocessed, and jobs that are not completed by the due date are assumed to be incorrectly processed. The machine is subject to breakdowns and repairs. Both premptive and non-preemptive policies are considered. We give conditions under which simple index rules are optimal. This generalizes and extends the results of Derman et al. [3], Pinedo and Rammouz [9], and Buyukkoc et al. [2], who derive policies that maximize the expected number of jobs correctly completed by the due date. We also consider policies that stochastically minimize the number of correct job completions. For single class systems, we give conditions under which FCFS (first-come-first-served) or LAST (least-attained-service-time) service disciplines stochastically minimize or maximize the number in the system.

Consider a stochastic loss network, where calls or customer types arrive and have to find a path through the network to a given destination, and where our aim is to maximize the gain (suitably defined) from the network. In general there will be a number of paths available, and when a call arrives the two questions to answer are first, should the call be accepted, and secondly, if it is accepted which route should it take? The answer to the first question is in some sense harder than the second, and all dynamic routing or control policies have some explicit or implicit mechanism for rejecting calls and so answer the question in some way.

We consider a continuously monitored system that gradually and stochastically deteriorates. An alarm threshold is set on the system deterioration level for triggering a delayed preventive maintenance operation. A mathematical model is developed to find the value of the alarm threshold that minimizes the asymptotic unavailability. Approximations are derived to improve the numerical optimization.

We suggest a simple algorithm for Monte Carlo generation of uniformly distributed variables on a compact group. Example include random permutations, Rubik's cube positions, orthogonal, unitary, and symplectic matrices, and elements of GLn over a finite field. the algorithm reduces to the “standard” fast algorithm when there is one, but many new example are included.

We introduce in this paper a new measure of component importance, called redundancy importance, in coherent systems. It is a measure of importance for the situation in which an active redundancy is to be made in a coherent system. This measure of component importance is compared with both the (Birnbaum) reliability importance and the structural importance of a component in a coherent system. Various models of component redundancy are studied, with particular reference to k/out / of / n systems, parallel-series systems, and series-parallel systems.

Consider a queueing model in which arriving customers have to choose between m parallel servers, each with its own queue. We prove for general arrival streams that the policy which assigns to the shortest queue is stochastically optimal for models with finite buffers and batch arrivals.

Uniform distributions on complicated combinatorial sets can be simulated by the Markov chain method. A condition is given for the simulations to be accurate in polynomial time. Similar analysis of the simulated annealing algorithm remains an open problem. The argument relies on a recent eigenvalue estimate of Alon [4]; the only new mathematical ingredient is a careful analysis of how the accuracy of sample averages of a Markov chain is related to the second-largest eigenvalue.

The purpose of this article is to study several preservation properties of stochastic comparisons based on the mean inactivity time order under the reliability operations of convolution and mixture. Characterizations and relationships with the other well-known orders are given. Some examples of interest in reliability theory are also presented. Finally, testing in the increasing mean inactivity time class is discussed.
