Revisiting the Earliest Human Presence in Mallorca, Western Mediterranean

Abstract

A new date for the assumed first humans in Mallorca disagrees strongly with the earliest dating of them. New light on the first settlement of Mallorca comes from the discussion of dates and the review of the empirical evidence for that settlement. We conclude that human arrival on Mallorca must be situated in the 3rd millennium cal BC.

Résumé

Une nouvelle date pour ce qui est supposé être les premiers humains à Majorque est en profond désaccord avec les datations antérieures. Cette nouvelle lumière sur la première occupation de Majorque vient de l'interprétation de ces datations et de la remise en question des témoignages empiriques la concernant. Nous en concluons que l'arrivée des hommes à Majorque doit se situer au cours du 3ème millénaire avant J.-C. en années calibrées.

Zusammenfassung

Ein neues Datum für die scheinbar ersten Menschen auf Mallorca widerspricht vollkommen ihrer frühesten Datierung. Neue Erkenntnisse zur ersten Besiedlung Mallorcas entstammen der Diskussion zu den Datierungen und aus der Überprüfung der empirischen Nachweise für diese erste Besiedlung. Wir folgern, daß die Ankunft des Menschen auf Mallorca in das 3. Jahrtausend cal BC datiert werden muß.

Resúmen

Una nueva datación para lo que se supone es la primera presencia humana en Mallorca difiere marcadamente de las fechas más tempranas existentes. Nuevas perspectivas para la primera ocupación de Mallorca emergen de la discusión de las fechas y de una revisión de la evidencia empírica para ese asentamiento. Concluimos que la llegada de las primeras poblaciones humanas a Mallorca debe situarse durante el tercer milenio cal BC.
