The work exhibits and applies the best of traditional comparative politics; sophisticated concern for a major theoretical problem of political science significance since Aristotle (namely, the role and character of political coercion in human society); versatility and skill in methodology, beginning, with impressive historical case-study accounts of coercion under varying political regimes in Peru and Argentina and going on to subject these data to systematic and rigorous analysis, using mainly content analysis and factor analysis.”
