Durant le dernier quart de siècle, l’anthropologie sociale a manifesté une remarquable vitalité dans le monde anglo-saxon. Une profusion de monographies ethnographiques, d’études ethnologiques et de contributions théoriques a été publiée; des méthodes de recherche très différentes de celles précédemment utilisées ont été introduites; des points de vue nouveaux ont été passionnément discutés. Au premier abord, ces différents courants apparaissent extrêmement divergents et très éloignés des préoccupations des écoles anthropologiques antérieures. Un examen plus approfondi montre cependant que ces nouvelles orientations sont en continuité avec les précédentes, soit qu’elles essaient de résoudre des problèmes suscités par celles-ci, soit qu’elles réagissent contre certains points de vue qui semblent conduire à des impasses. Par ailleurs, ces diverses « écoles » ont apporté un certain nombre de contributions qui sont définitivement acquises et s’intégrent dans ce que l’on pourrait appeler le fonds commun de l’anthropologie. Nous essayerons, dans cet article, de donner un très bref aperçu de quelques-uns de ces apports en les replaçant dans la perspective des recherches anthropologiques antérieures.
