Understanding movements of Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) into berry fruit crops from wild-fruit hosts in borders of semi-natural agroecosystems, such as lowbush blueberry, is important to determining harvesting time and managing wild-fruit diversity near crops. This study aimed to inventory the wild-fruit hosts associated with lowbush blueberry (Ericaceae) production in Québec, Canada, near the limits of lowbush blueberry’s eastern North American range. We also tested the hypothesis that fruit traits of berry fruit species present in or near lowbush blueberry fields might explain field infestation levels. Flies of both sexes emerged from five wild-fruit species in 2016, to which six more species were added in 2017. The most productive wild-fruit hosts were Cornus canadensis (Cornaceae) and Aralia hispida (Araliaceae) (> 100 emerged flies/100 g of fruit) in 2016, to which Prunus pensylvanica (Rosaceae) and Rubus idaeus (Rosaceae) were added in 2017. Among nine variables considered in statistical modelling (fruit size, sugar content, and reflected colour bands) and taxonomic family (a nominal variable), none could explain field infestation levels over two years. In lab tests comparing fruits of Cornus canadensis, a common weed within fields, and lowbush blueberries, mated D. suzukii females laid twice as many eggs on blueberries, but both species were equally suitable for development.

We record 392 species or morphospecies of bees (Hymenoptera: Apoidea) for Manitoba, Canada, which is 154 more species than reported in 2015 and includes five new generic records since 2015 (Ashmeadiella, Brachymelecta, Eucera, Neolarra, and Triepeolus). Thirteen new records reported here are new for Canada: Calliopsis (Nomadopsis) australior Cockerell, Perdita (Perdita) tridentata Stevens, Brachymelecta interrupta (Cresson), Diadasia (Dasiapis) ochracea (Cockerell), Melissodes bidentis Cockerell, Nomada crawfordi crawfordi Cockerell, Nomada fuscicincta Swenk, Nomada sphaerogaster Cockerell, Nomada xantholepis Cockerell, Triepeolus cf. grindeliae Cockerell, Dianthidium (Dianthidium) parvum (Cresson), Coelioxys (Xerocoelioxys) nodis Baker, and Megachile (Megachiloides) dakotensis Mitchell. We remove the following species from the list of Manitoba bees based on re-examination of voucher material: Andrena (Ptilandrena) geranii Robertson, Andrena (Rhacandrena) robertsonii Dalla Torre, Andrena (Simandrena) nasonii Robertson, Andrena (Trachandrena) ceanothi Viereck, Andrena (Trachandrena) quintilis Robertson, Lasioglossum (Hemihalictus) pectoraloides (Cockerell), Lasioglossum (Lasioglossum) forbesii (Robertson), and Dianthidium (Dianthidium) concinnum (Cresson). We propose that Nomada alpha paralpha Cockerell, 1921 and N. alpha dialpha Cockerell, 1921 are junior synonyms of N. alpha Cockerell, 1905. Nomada arenicola Swenk, 1912 is considered a junior synonym of N. fervida Smith, 1854. Protandrena albertensis (Cockerell) and Neolarra mallochi Michener are recognised as valid species. We provide additional notes on taxonomy, nomenclature, and behaviour for select species in the list.

Monoterpenes in the resin of host trees are important host-location and -selection signals for conifer-infesting bark beetles and can increase or reduce responses to aggregation pheromones. Research on this interaction has been largely limited to collocated release points of the semiochemicals; however, sources are often separated in nature. I performed a trapping experiment to investigate whether distance between semiochemical release points influences how host monoterpene alpha-pinene affects Ips avulsus (Eichhoff) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) response to its aggregation pheromone (ipsdienol and lanierone). High release (8 g/day) of alpha-pinene from a pheromone-baited trap caused a reduction in catches, but the same release of alpha-pinene from 4 m away significantly increased catches relative to pheromone alone. A low release (0.06 g/day) of alpha-pinene with either arrangement had no effect. Hence, a host odour released at rates sufficient to deter I. avulsus responses to its pheromone may nevertheless enhance attraction if the release point is sufficiently displaced from the pheromone source. The result suggests that, for I. avulsus, the semiochemical alpha-pinene may influence host finding and close-range assessment of host suitability in different ways. Operational lure formulations for some species of bark beetle might be improved by separating pheromone and host odour components or by adding a displaced host odour device.

The effects of ethanol and α-pinene lures on trap catches of forest coleopteran predators and fungivores were evaluated in studies conducted in 2002–2004 to evaluate trap responses of bark and woodboring beetles in the southern United States of America. Traps baited with ethanol, α-pinene, or a combination of the two attracted predator species in six families of Coleoptera. The most abundant species were Coptodera aerata Dejean (Carabidae), Thanasimus dubius Fabricius (Cleridae), Temnoscheila virescens (Fabricius) (Trogossitidae), and Lasconotus spp. (Zopheridae). Most species were attracted by both ethanol and α-pinene lures; traps baited with both compounds generally caught the greatest numbers for most species. There was some evidence of geographic variation in responses to ethanol and α-pinene. For example, catches of C. aerata in ethanol-baited traps were enhanced by the addition of α-pinene in North Carolina but not in Alabama or South Carolina. Catches of Lasconotus spp. in traps baited with α-pinene were enhanced with ethanol in Florida but not in North and South Carolina. The fungivore Pycnomerus sulcicollis LeConte (Zopheridae) was captured in significant numbers in traps baited with α-pinene. Responses of predators to ethanol and α-pinene mirrored those of bark and woodboring beetles captured in these same experiments.

We examine the implications for intercontinental dispersal of the extinct ant genus, Titanomyrma Archibald et al. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Formiciinae), following the discovery of its first fossil in Eocene temperate upland Canada. Modern Holarctic distributions of plants and animals were in part formed by dispersals across Late Cretaceous through early Eocene Arctic land bridges. Mild winters in a microthermal Arctic would allow taxa today restricted to the tropics by cold intolerance to cross, with episodic hyperthermal events allowing tropical taxa requiring hot climates to cross. Modern ants with the largest queens inhabit low latitudes of high temperature and mild coldest months, whereas those with smaller queens inhabit a wide variety of latitudes and climates. Gigantic and smaller formiciine ants (Titanomyrma and Formicium Westwood) are known from Europe and North America in the Eocene. The new Canadian Titanomyrma inhabited a cooler upland. It is incomplete, indistinctly preserved, and distorted in fossilisation, and so we do not assign it to a species or erect a new one for it. The true size of this fossil is unclear by this distortion: small size would support gigantism in Titanomyrma requiring hot climates and dispersal during hyperthermals; if it was large, it may have been cold-winter intolerant and able to have crossed during any time when the land bridge was present.

The swede midge, Contarinia nasturtii (Kieffer) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), is invasive to North America, where it was first reported in Ontario, Canada. It is now established in eastern Canada and from eastern Minnesota in the Midwest to the northeastern seaboard of the United States of America. Swede midge is a serious pest of brassicaceous plants, including vegetable and oilseed crops. To ensure its early detection in the Northern Great Plains, a monitoring programme was established using pheromone traps located primarily along the edges of canola fields from North Dakota, United States of America, northwest to the Peace River region, in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada. In North Dakota, 117 trap sites were monitored between 2015 and 2021. In western Canada, monitoring occurred on a small scale from 2006 to 2011, and 521 trap sites were monitored from 2013 to 2021. Swede midge was not detected in canola grown in the Northern Great Plains between 2006 and 2021. Partners in North Dakota and western Canada intend to maintain the monitoring programme to support early detection of swede midge if it does continue to disperse northwestwards. The monitoring programme contributes to outreach activities and fosters farmer and agronomist participation in pest management (i.e., community science) in the Northern Great Plains.

Narrow-spectrum insecticides are currently used to control populations of spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana Clemens (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), in eastern Canada. However, these could have nontarget impacts on other caterpillars – some of which may serve as alternative or alternate hosts to key parasitoids – that are also susceptible to control tactics. This study was conducted to determine how the insecticides, Bacillus thuringiensis variety kurstaki (Btk) and tebufenozide, used to control spruce budworm populations, impact caterpillar communities and associated parasitism rates. Post-treatment field sampling of caterpillars was conducted in 2018 and 2019 in New Brunswick, Canada, at sites treated with either Btk or tebufenozide and at control sites. Caterpillar species richness and abundance, community structure, and parasitism rates were assessed using molecular analyses for 659 collected caterpillars. We found that insecticide applications had no significant impact on abundance, species richness, or parasitism rate relative to the measurements made in the control sites. Nonetheless, a significantly higher caterpillar abundance and lower parasitism rate occurred in Btk-treated sites than in tebufenozide-treated sites. Overall, however, Btk and tebufenozide treatments did not negatively affect the non-budworm caterpillar community under the present conditions of low caterpillar densities, suggesting that parasitoids have alternative and alternate hosts after treatments that target the spruce budworm.

Pests in stored grains pose a global threat to food security. Tribolium castaneum (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) is one of the most serious stored-grain pests in the world, capable of surviving harsh environments and developing resistance to certain classes of insecticides. Fumigation toxicity and the impact of Melaleuca alternifolia Cheel (Myrtaceae) essential oil on T. castaneum were investigated in this study. The 50% lethal concentration (LC50) fumigation toxicity of M. alternifolia essential oil for T. castaneum adults and larvae was 122.7 µL/L at 24 hours and 280 µL/L at 48 hours, respectively. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry showed that the oil’s major volatile compounds included terpinen-4-ol (31.78%), α-terpineol (20.24%), and terpinolene (17.94%). The treatment disrupted the normal enzymatic activity of acetylcholinesterase, carboxylesterase, and glutathione-S-transferase in T. castaneum adults and caused DNA damage. Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil is a strong fumigant and may be a good substitute for synthetic fumigants used to control pests of stored grain.

Relatedness within groups is influenced by the mating patterns of founders: the more parents that contribute to a group, the lower the relatedness of their offspring. Xylocopa virginica (Hymenoptera: Apidae) is a facultatively social bee in which low relatedness is influenced by sequential maternity. We investigated whether multiple paternity, which would occur if egg-laying females mate multiple times, might also contribute to low relatedness among female nestmates. We used two approaches to investigate how frequently females mate polyandrously. First, we used visual observations of mating behaviour to estimate mating frequencies and to evaluate evidence for temporal variation in female receptivity to mates. Second, we used a data set of microsatellite genotypes to evaluate evidence for multiple paternity based on inferred proportions of full and half sisters. Based on visual observations, we inferred a female mating frequency of 1.1 (harmonic mean). Females were more receptive early in their first nestmate provisioning phase and less receptive in their second brood provisioning phase. Based on microsatellite genotypes analysed with COLONY software, we inferred that 5–44% of female sibships included maternal half sisters, implying female mating frequencies between 1.13 and 1.41 (harmonic means). Thus, multiple mating contributes to the low group relatedness found in Xylocopa virginica.

Intraspecific variation is the variation in morphology, physiology, behaviour, and social organisation of any species as it adapts to changing environmental circumstances by varying its feeding habits. In the present study, we investigated the disparities between the preselected (F1) and postselected (F15) populations of Propylea dissecta Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) when fed on four different prey species, namely Aphis gossypii Glover from bottle gourd, Lagenaria vulgaris Seringe (Cucurbitaceae), Lipaphis erysimi (Kaltenbach) from mustard, Brassica campestris Linnaeus (Brassicaceae), Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch) from maize, Zea mays Linnaeus (Poaceae), and Uroleucon compositae (Theobald) from chrysanthemum, Chrysanthemum indicum Linnaeus (Asteraceae), under an experimental evolution study. A simple bimodal pattern of distribution was obtained for each prey species, which was warped with variations in prey species for both F1 and F15. This research might provide the basis for further studies on the differential pace of development of various other prey species, improve understanding of ecological evolution, and provide a spectrum of fast-growing bioagents for the introduction of biological control strategy in pest management techniques against agropests.

Fungi living within a plant (i.e., endophytic fungi) can directly affect the growth of the host plant or have indirect effects by affecting levels of damage to the plant caused by insect herbivory or plant pathogens. Greenhouse and field trials were conducted to investigate the endophytic effects of the fungus Beauveria bassiana on wheat, on the wheat-feeding Sunn pest, Eurygaster integriceps (Hemiptera: Scutelleridae), and on the wheat pathogen, Fusarium culmorum (Nectriaceae), which causes root and crown rot disease. Conidia of B. bassiana were applied to wheat either by foliar spray, soil drench, or seed treatment. Seed treatment with conidia provided the highest re-isolation percentages: 91.7% in leaves, 95.8% in stems, and 91.7% in roots. Inoculated plants were taller and had greater wet and dry weights compared to control plants. In both greenhouse and field studies, E. integriceps that were fed inoculated plants laid eggs that were less likely to hatch. Inoculations reduced the incidence of root and crown rot disease by 42% under greenhouse conditions. These results document the potential of using endophytic infections of B. bassiana in wheat as a control measure for Sunn pest and root and crown rot disease.

Tamalia (Hemiptera: Aphididae: Tamaliinae), a Nearctic aphid genus, is associated with galls on woody plants in the family Ericaceae (Arctostaphylos spp., Arbutus arizonica, and Comarostaphylis diversifolia). Tamalia cruzensis Miller and Pike, n. sp., Tamalia glaucensis Miller and Pike, n. sp., and Tamalia moranae Miller and Pike, n. sp. are described and illustrated. Two of these, T. cruzensis and T. moranae, represent host plant records for Tamalia on genera other than Arctostaphylos spp. Character measurements, comparisons, and descriptions; DNA cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 sequences; geographic distributions; seasonal occurrence; biology; and host plant associations are provided, along with diagnoses and a key to the known species based on the gall-inhabiting apterous adult stage.

In recent years, a Trigonorhinus sp. (Coleoptera) has caused serious damage to Caragana liouana Zhao Y. Chang and Yakovlev, a major ecological restoration shrub in China. Here, we survey the occurrence and damage pattern of Trigonorhinus sp. and its galls and compare the growth of affected and unaffected plants. Trigonorhinus sp. larvae usually infest the main trunk and lateral branches of the plant, causing the affected branches to become partially swollen and verrucose. Galls develop in stages depending on whether eggs are laid in May or July and proceed in sequence over three years from egg-laying to formation, expansion, dormancy, maturity, dormancy, maturity, and death. Galls inhibit plant development to some extent. On average, six (at least one, and no more than 18; standard error of the mean = 3) larvae occupy each gall, and the number of larvae within a gall did not significantly affect gall size. Gall size significantly affected branch dieback, and large-diameter infested branches had larger galls. This study clarifies the growth dynamics of Trigonorhinus sp. galls and provides a basis for further research into the growth mechanism of the species’ galls.

A combination of morphological and molecular techniques were used to revise the genus Ellescus Dejean, 1821 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Ellescini) in North America. Four valid species of Ellescus are documented from the Nearctic Region. These are the widespread, hypervariable E. ephippiatus (Say, 1831), the Holarctic E. bipunctatus (Linnaeus, 1758) (of which E. borealis (Carr, 1920) new synonym is found to be a new junior synonym), the west coast endemic E. californicus (Casey, 1885) (resurrected from synonymy with E. ephippiatus (Say, 1831)), and the temperately distributed E. michaeli new species. A neotype is designated for E. bipunctatus. The European species, E. scanicus (Paykull, 1792), is determined to have been erroneously reported from North America. An illustrated identification key, distributional data, and DNA sequences (CO1, ITS2) are provided to facilitate identification of the Ellescus species in North America. Notably, CO1 failed to delineate E. ephippiatus and E. michaeli, but the faster-evolving ITS2 reliably separated these taxa, further supporting the use of multiple markers in taxonomic studies and the utility of ITS2 in weevil species delineation.

Intermittent streams that periodically cease surface flow have long been understudied in ecology and underrepresented in conservation policy. However, they currently account for 30–50% of the global river network, and that number is rising due to anthropogenic water extraction, land-use change, and climate change. We explored the Coleoptera biodiversity of the south Pacific coast region of British Columbia, Canada, using pitfall traps at perennial and naturally intermittent stream reaches, in shoreline, dry streambed, and riparian habitats, in both flowing (spring and early summer) and nonflowing (late summer) phases. We found that habitats around perennial reaches had significantly greater abundance of Coleoptera individuals than did those around intermittent reaches. However, neither habitat type nor flow regime was a significant predictor of taxon richness, and intermittent stream sites featured unique taxa that were not found near perennial streams. This aligns with recent results from other taxonomic groups; that is, finding that intermittent ecosystems can host high taxonomic diversity of Coleoptera, on par with or even greater than that of perennial streams. Because intermittent streams will likely become more prevalent within the global river network, a better understanding of how different species use these habitats is needed to inform appropriate biodiversity conservation efforts and flow management.

Food preferences and choices are common among animals, including insects. Studies on food preferences have been done on coccinellids using eggs and aphids as diet, but information on the food choices of the aphidophagous ladybird, Propylea dissecta (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), under laboratory conditions, is scarce. This study examined the effect of physical activity (walking) on food choice. We reared P. dissecta larvae on aphids, Aphis craccivora (Hemiptera: Aphididae), until the fourth-instar stage, and then allowed the fourth-instar larvae to walk on a glass rod for different time intervals to illustrate the energetic costs of foraging. After walking, larvae were provided simultaneous food choices of equidistantly placed food, i.e., A. craccivora, conspecific eggs, and heterospecific eggs. As the walking time duration gradually increased, the level of larval activity increased, resulting in poorer food choices.

We evaluated the diversity and spatiotemporal emergence patterns of parasitoid wasp species in the genus Eurytoma Illiger (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae) associated with leaf galls induced by Diplolepis variabilis Bassett (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) throughout the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada. We collected D. variabilis galls throughout the region, recorded adult Eurytoma emergence times, extracted mitochondria DNA from a subset of the emergents, and used cytochrome c oxidase 1 and cytochrome b amplificons to assign sampled individuals to species. We also assayed for the bacterial endosymbiont Wolbachia to evaluate the incidence of thelytoky in Eurytoma. Eurytoma showed an extended emergence period and a significant right skew in male emergence. We recorded six Eurytoma species, one of which appears to be previously undescribed. The greatest diversity of Eurytoma species occurs in the north of the sampled area. Five of the six species showed Wolbachia infection in at least some individuals, and the most abundant and widespread species, Eurytoma imminuta Bugbee, showed high Wolbachia infection levels and an all-female population, which strongly indicates endosymbiont-induced thelytoky. Our results demonstrate that gall communities are locally variable, and we suggest that future studies be undertaken to quantify variation in community composition at more local scales than has been past practice.

Elevational gradients are excellent models to understand species distribution across sites with marked shifts in environmental conditions. In northern South America, tepuis are table-top mountains with elevations above 1000 m and high biodiversity and endemism levels. In this study, we assessed the effect of elevation on dung beetle (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) assemblage structure (species richness, abundance, and biomass) in Tepequém, a tepui located in northern Brazil. Dung beetles were sampled with pitfall traps within seven elevational bands from 250 to 850 m. A total of 83 individuals from 14 species were collected, Oxysternon festivum (Linnaeus, 1758) and an unidentified Onthophagus species being the most abundant. Elevation did not affect beetle species richness and biomass. However, species composition from 750 to 850 m differed statistically from that recorded at lower elevations. Our results suggest that beetle assemblages possess a bimodal distribution along an altitudinal gradient on the Tepequém. The contrasting vegetation structure of tepuis between highlands (shrubland savannah vegetation) and lowlands (tropical rainforest) explains the different composition of the assemblages. This study should be considered as a starting point in improving our understanding of the dung beetle diversity of tepuis, which present a unique singular relationship between elevation and species diversity.

The absence of sugar resources can be an important factor in limiting the success of parasitoids as biological control agents. Restoring vegetation complexity within agricultural landscapes has thus become a major focus of conservation biological control efforts, with a traditional emphasis on nectar resources. Aphid honeydew is also an important source of sugars that is infrequently considered. We carried out a laboratory experiment to examine the potential effects of honeydew from six different aphid species by crop species combinations on the longevity of Bracon cephi Gahan (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), the most important biological control of the wheat stem sawfly, Cephus cinctus Norton (Hymenoptera: Cephidae), a major pest of wheat in the northern Great Plains of North America. The benefits of honeydew for parasitoid longevity varied significantly among different aphid and crop species, illustrating the complexity of these interactions. However, honeydew produced by four aphid species commonly found in wheat, pea, and canola crops significantly increased the longevity (by two- to threefold) of the parasitoid. The study suggests that honeydew provisioning could be an important mechanism underlying the benefits of crop diversification to support biological control that merits further research.
