Next APSR Editorial Team Announced

APSA is pleased to announce the next editorial leadership of the American Political Science Review (APSR), the flagship scholarly journal in political science. Beginning in July 2012, the new APSR editorial team will be led by John Ishiyama and colleagues Marijke Breuning, Steven Forde, and Valerie Martinez-Ebers from the University of North Texas (UNT). The APSA Council has appointed the new team to a four-year term, renewable for an additional two-year term. Professor Ishiyama will serve as the lead editor for the initial two years, after which time the lead-editor role may rotate among members of the editorial team with the consent of the team and the APSA Council.

The APSR has led scholarly publishing in political science for over a century and continues to represent both fundamental scholarship in the discipline and new directions and developments in the field. The incoming editorial team is eager to join this tradition to advance the journal's service to the discipline. APSA is pleased to enter into an agreement with the new team and with the University of North Texas, which has committed significant financial and administrative support to the APSR.

Like the current team of APSR editors at UCLA, the incoming editors will “publish scholarly research that is of exceptional merit; that focuses on important issues; is of general interest; and understandable to as many scholars as possible.” The new editors seek to increase the diversity of submissions and will engage in a broad and systemic outreach to the range of constituencies within the APSA community and groups of scholars affiliated with organizations, conferences, and meetings outside the APSA (see “Meet the Editors” text box). Manuscripts submitted to the APSR will be directed to the new editorial team beginning in July 2012. The UNT team will have full responsibility for the articles appearing in the APSR beginning in Volume 107 with the February 2013 issue and will continue to use Editorial Manager to administer the journal submissions and reviews (www.editorialmanager.com/apsr). The Team

Lead Editor, John Ishiyama, professor (1992 PhD Michigan State University), is a comparative politics scholar who specializes in political parties and democratization in postcommunist Russian, East Central European, and African (particularly Ethiopian) politics. He has also done considerable work on ethnic conflict and politics (particularly the role played by ethnic parties) and on the scholarship of teaching and learning. He has published six books, 105 journal articles, and 16 chapters in edited volumes. His work has included the use of both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. He has held leadership positions in the APSA, Midwest Political Science Association (MPSA), and International Studies Association, in particular serving as a member of the APSA Executive Council from 2007 to 2009 and the MPSA Executive Council from 2010 to present. He was a book review editor for the journal International Politics. He is currently editor-in-chief of the Journal of Political Science Education, the journal of the APSA Political Science Education section, published by Taylor and Francis/Routledge.

Marijke Breuning, professor (1992 PhD Ohio State University), is an international relations scholar who specializes in foreign policy analysis and international political economy, particularly foreign aid. She has also done considerable work related to political psychology, constructivism, political development, and women's issues. She has held major leadership positions in the foreign policy analysis sections of both the APSA and the International Studies Association (ISA), and has served as vice president for ISA. She was one of the editors of Foreign Policy Analysis, a journal published by Blackwell Publishers for the ISA. She was a book review editor for the journal International Politics. She is also the editor of the Journal of Political Science Education, the journal of the APSA Political Science Education section, published by Taylor and Francis/Routledge.

Steven Forde, professor (1984 PhD University of Toronto), is a political theorist who has published on ancient political thought, early modern political thought, philosophy of science, and American political thought. He has also published in the field of international ethics (and served as an associate editor of the International Studies Quarterly when it was housed at the University of North Texas). He has published one book (with Cornell University Press), and numerous book chapters and refereed journal articles. Four of his articles have appeared in the APSR.

Valerie Martinez-Ebers, professor (1990 PhD Ohio State University), is a scholar of American politics with expertise in the politics of race and ethnicity, women in politics and public policy, especially in the areas of education, immigration, and aging. A co-principal investigator for the Latino National Survey (8,600 respondents), funded by the Ford, Carnegie, Russell Sage, Hewlett, Joyce, and National Science Foundations, she has considerable experience in the design of survey research and the analysis of public opinion. She has also published work that relies primarily on qualitative analyses of focus group conversations or elite interviews. A former vice president of the APSA and former president of the Western Political Science Association (WPSA), she has served on the executive councils of the APSA, WPSA, and SWPSA and held a variety of other leadership positions in the organized sections and caucuses. She was guest editor for the Southwestern Journal of Aging but her most memorable editing experience was working as an APSR intern under the direction of editor Samuel C. Patterson.

Journal Options, Formats

In response to growing interest among members, APSA introduced a new online-only APSA journal subscription option to members in February. Members can choose which of the three APSA journals to receive in print or in online-only digital format forgoing the mailed, print copy. The new subscription option enables members to select their preferred format for PS, APSR, and Perspectives, providing better service to members who read APSA journals online, want to reduce their carbon footprint, save shelf space, or prefer not to receive print copies for any reason. For instance, a member can select print and online access for APSR and Perspectives and online-only subscription to PS. Members who prefer to retain print will continue to receive journals as they do now and receive online access and can change their journal subscription preferences at any time by logging into their MyAPSA account.

With the new online-only subscription choices, APSA also offers two enhancements to the online formats of the journals.
