Summary

This chapter discusses the historical psalms, Ps 78, Ps 105, and Ps 106, as acts of commemoration. In this chapter, I have three goals: 1) to demonstrate how the psalms function as a commemorative form, and not only as a concatenation of quotations; 2) to show how the literary act of commemoration correlates in each case to a vision of the social unit; and 3) to outline the commemorative contours of the abbreviated narrative told and retold in the historical psalms, that it might be recognized in later iterations in Second Temple Judaism. The schematic form of the repeated narrative allows Israel’s history to be told and retold in ways that facilitate its role as a model – a model for sociopolitical order (Ps 78), ethnic distinction (Ps 105), or effective intercessory speech (Ps 106).
