Summary
The final focus of this study necessitates a departure from the high cultural register of Ruskin, Arnold and Pater, and a consideration instead of the middle- and lowbrow literature of the late nineteenth century. This is because the categories of idleness, aesthetic contemplation and pervasive repose are all central subject matters in Victorian vampire fiction, even though the abundant recent criticism of this field has not had occasion to observe this connection.
