Summary

The previous chapter argued that Ax (poems 52–60) is to be bracketed from A (1–51), and that once this bracketing is made, the authorial arrangement of A and C (65–116) is vindicated: their terminal points are in such close dialogue, and A is mirrored so finely by C2 (69–116), that authorial design is the only reasonable explanation. Meanwhile, the case for B (61–64) as an authorial unity is greatly enhanced, in that its terminal points participate fully in the intratextual dialogue of A and C.
