Summary
Many Italians consider Leopardi their greatest poet after Dante. Born into an aristocratic family, he mastered the literatures of eight or nine languages by the time he was twenty, but in the process he ruined his health, posture, and eyesight, and thereafter lived a mainly reclusive life. Like Alfred de Vigny’s, his poems often express an austere, unreligious, and stoical vision of life, but he took some comfort in nature despite its indifference to human suffering.
