Summary
The beloved national poet of Scotland, nicknamed “The Ploughman Poet” for his origin in an impoverished farming family, Burns wrote poems in Scots “Doric” as well as standard literary English, and considered most of them to be songs sung to established tunes or “airs.” He was also a collector of Scottish folksongs.
