Summary
On the outbreak of war on 3 September 1939, the pre-planned process of sending an expeditionary force to France began to be put into effect. Within five weeks, the Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) of the BEF, General Lord Gort, had four regular divisions under his command on the Continent: 1st and 2nd Divisions of I Corps, under Lieutenant-General Sir John Dill, and 3rd and 4th Divisions of II Corps, under Lieutenant-General Sir Alan Brooke.
