Summary
There are numerous, often co-occuring causes of both hypersomnia and hyposomnia. Optimizing patient outcomes relies on accurately identifying the neurobiological and behavioral causes of sleep/wake disturbances. In Chapter 2, we discuss the diagnostic tools available for assessing the degree of hyper- and hyposomnia as well as strategies for determining the etiology of excessive sleepiness or wakefulness.
