19.2.43/4. Morpeth. I have been at the army of Newcastle where I met with Sir Thomas Glemham and Sir William Carnaby, who brought a letter from the nobility of Oxford, and all those of that side, both old and new Lords, directed to the secret Council of Scotland and the Conservators of the Peace of that Kingdom. It was easy to discern that it was an old business that had laid so long in the Marquis of Newcastle’s hands, both by the outside which was all worn and torn, and by the names subscribed, the one being Lord Byron whom we have heard to have been long in and about Cheshire. On Saturday last there came 60 musketeers, and 20 horse came out of the castle of Tynemouth with intent to burn some houses and corn which lay near the Scots quarters, but were met with 15 horse of the Earl of Eglinton’s regiment who fell on them and took 50 of them prisoners; 48 of which the General sent unto Newcastle to the Marquis without demanding any exchange for them. The ship by which I sent my last lines to you, not being, as I understand, yet loosed from Blyth Nook, I add a word more to what I then said on occasion of a new accident which happened since the writing of my last, and which I assure myself will be represented to you from Oxford in some hideous form as if the whole Scotch army was utterly defeated.
