Summary
Ketamine is not a new psychoactive substance; it has been produced as a pharmaceutical product for many decades. It is a licensed anaesthetic and analgesic medication in many countries and is particularly used in paediatric, emergency and veterinary medicine. Ketamine appears to possess rapid antidepressant effects, independent of its transient psychoactive effects. There is increasing evidence that ketamine may have therapeutic uses for the management of treatment-resistant depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.
