Chapter 5: Notes on data collection

I obtained information about loop networking in the case industries through a total of 101 interviews and 78 questionnaire replies, mostly from firms, but also from other actors involved in each industry's loop.

Any firm or nonfirm with regular and substantial involvement in a case industry was defined as being part of that industry's loop. “Substantial” means that the firm or nonfirm in question has dedicated at least part of its assets to activities directly related to the industry such as manufacturing of products (but not parts), research, or regulatory oversight. “Firm” in this context denotes companies producing, or preparing to produce, micromachines, semiconductor equipment, or apparel.
