Summary
The following are the most striking examples of the differing estimates of various houses supplied by Layton and Legh on the one hand, and other sources of evidence on the other. No attempt is made to reconcile the conflicting verdicts, but it must be remembered that in any age the judgments on a community made by a hostile critic and a benevolent outsider will differ widely.
