Summary
In writing this book I have incurred a number of debts. Christopher Andrew supervised the thesis on which this book was based and nurtured my researches from very unpromising beginnings. Patrick Fridenson directed my researches when I was in Paris; his helpfulness was equalled only by that of the staff at the Bibliothèque Nationale. Three very loyal and tolerant friends – Alison Henwood, Joel Felix and Kevin Passmore – took time off from their own work to act as text editors, critics and psychotherapists. I am very grateful for the advice and encouragement given to me by M. Jean-Noel Jeanneney, Dr Julian Jackson, Professor Douglas Johnson, Professor Robert Paxton, Dr Adrian Rossiter, M. Henri Rousso and Dr Robert Tombs.
I am grateful to The British Academy for the award of a Research Studentship and to Trinity College for a number of grants that have enabled me to visit Paris.
