Summary
13 July 1814, note 3
Several writers have stated that Zachary Macaulay discouraged TBM's eagerness to contribute to the Christian Observer, but this letter is the only definite evidence that he did. Roberts, Letters of Hannah More to Zachary Macaulay, pp. xix–xx, says that TBM was ‘often baffled’ in his efforts to publish. An anonymous source quoted in [Eliza Rennie], Traits of Character, 1860, 11, 12, says that when TBM submitted an article signed with his initials Zachary Macaulay sent it back and published a note addressed to ‘TBM’ in the next issue. Henry Thornton rememberered that Zachary Macaulay, though publishing a contribution from TBM signed ‘Juvenis,’ accompanied it with a note instructing Juvenis to think more and write less (Alston, ‘Recollections of Macaulay,’ p. 59). I have not found either of these notes in the Christian Observer, The article attributed to TBM on Thornton's authority is ‘On the Deceitfulness of the Human Heart,’ Christian Observer, xv (October 1816), 635: the attribution is not otherwise supported.
There is good evidence that the following items, at least, in the Christian Observer are by TBM: ‘Nature of an Auto-da-Fé,’ x (March 1811), 161–2 (an extract from Foxe's Book of Martyrs with a brief preface; according to Margaret Macaulay, Recollections, p. 238, this was a collaboration between TBM and his sister Selina); ‘Observations on Novel Reading,’ xv (December 1816), 784–7 (Zachary Macaulay to Kenneth Macaulay, 1 January 1821: MS, University of London; Trevelyan, 1,60); ‘Remarks on A.A. and Candidus on Novel Reading,’ xvi (April 1817), 230–1 (Zachary Macaulay to Kenneth Macaulay, 1 January 1821); ‘Paraphrase of the Prophecy of Nahum,’ xix (March 1820), 169–70 (Zachary Macaulay to Hannah More, 30 March 1820, in Knutsford, Zachary Macaulay, p. 352); ‘The Lamentation of the Virgins of Israel for the Daughter of Jephthah: A Hebrew Eclogue,’ xix (September 1820), 587–8 (see [19?] August 1820).
