The bust of Coke, in judicial robes and wearing the collar of SS, is of particular interest owing to the correspondence quoted in the Introduction, which proves (a) that the College sometimes approached possible benefactors; (b) that the College sometimes suggested possible originals for the sculptor to work from–in this case the portrait of Coke given by Lord Leicester; (c) that Roubiliac was described by the College authorities in this the last and most fruitful year of his work for them as “our Sculptor.” This bust is in every way one of the grandest of the series, and its success is proved by Roubiliac's subsequent summons to Holkham to execute portraits of Lord Leicester himself, one of which is now known only from the marble copy executed by Chantrey. There is a very poor engraving–the worst of the four, which is saying much–in the Cambridge Portfolio, by way of illustration to a delightful paper on Coke which is well worthy the attention of historians to-day.
