Summary
Evidence-based medicine is the process of systematically finding, appraising and using contemporaneous research findings as the basis for clinical decisions (Rosenberg and Donald, 1995). Sometimes the term evidenced-based practice is used to reflect that the principles and practice can be applied in a wide variety of clinical situations.
The key steps in evidence-based medicine are:
Developing the clinical question
Searching the literature and identifying relevant articles and other resources relevant to the question
Critically appraising the evidence to assess its validity and relevance
Assessing the quality of evidence
Applying the evidence.
