Summary

These results are presented in two ways. Before 1914 there were few contested candidatures, so individual results of contested wards are presented in full. It is often difficult to ascertain the political affiliation of uncontested victors (though most would have been Tory) and this is not given. On some occasions the political affiliation of candidates even in contested elections is not clear and a question mark follows the party affiliation if this is deduced from other sources (the candidates' known politics on other issues, etc.). After 1918 there are more contests and results are presented thematically with Table D.2 listing the affiliation of the victor (not always known) and Table D.3 listing the percentage vote achieved by Labour in those seats it contested.
