Summary

JARing: term referring to the behavior whereby one tends to “jeopardize assets that are remote.” This behavior is characterized by current decisions that greatly discount their long-term effects. This behavior is found to be particularly frequent in decisions involving land use and the environment. See also cognitive bias.

Joint care: see alternative versus joint care.

Joint maximization: see Kaldor–Hicks criterion.

Journal of Law and Economics: the oldest journal specializing in the economic analysis of law. It was established in 1958 at the University of Chicago, and since then has published many influential articles in law and economics, including Ronald Coase’s (1960) widely cited article “The problem of social cost”. Aaron Director served as the first editor of the journal from 1958 to 1963, followed by Coase, who served as editor from 1964 to 1982. He was joined by William Landes from 1974 until 1991. In more recent years the journal’s editors have been Dennis Carlton (1981–present), Frank Easterbrook (1982–9), Sam Peltzman (1990–present), Alan Sykes (1992–2000), Richard Epstein (1992–2002), George Triantis (2001–4), Austan Goolsby (2003–4), Edward Snyder (2003–9), Randall Kroszner (2005–6), Douglas Lichtman (2005–6), John Gould (2007– present), and Anup Malani (2007–present). The Journal of Law and Economics is one of the three journals in the field of law and economics published by the University of Chicago Press (together with The Journal of Legal Studies and the Supreme Court Economic Review). The journal continues to provide a valuable resource for academic economists and law and economics scholars, although its scope and prominence have been reduced by the creation of other journals in the field of law and economics. See also law and economics journals.
