Summary

siue illam Cois fulgentem incedere cogis hoc totum e Coa ueste uolumen erit; seu uidi ad frontemsparsos errare capillos, gaudet laudatis ire superba comis

5 illam] iuuat Housman croceis… Cois Palmer: uideo…Cois Leo cogis] togis DiVi: uidi : noui Huschke: cerno Leo: coccis Lachmann, qui etiam 9, 10, 7, 8, 5, 6 ita collocauit, 7, 8, 5, 6, 9, 10 Fontein 6 hac Barth: mox Senger totum de codd. Voss.: actutum e Rossberg

None of the corrections inspires conviction. Editors who hold to the MSS have vainly tried to vindicate cogis=adducis by passages such as 1. 4. 2 where reluctance on the part of the object is implied; but here there is no reluctance. I should rather rest on Vitr. 7. praef. 13 quorum artis eminens excellentia coegit adseptem spectaculorum eius operis peruenire famam as evidence for this, perhaps colloquial, use of cogere.

seu quicquid fecit siue est quodcumque locuta

seu and siue are more naturally taken as uel si than as uel. For quisquis = quiuis Liv. 41. 8. 10 quibusquibus Romanis seems to be the best classical warrant, though Paulinus of Nola (ap. Aus. Epist. 31. 212) has si Vascone saltu / quisquis agit purus sceleris uitam; cf. also the abl. quoquo modo (Plaut. Men. 827, Tac. Ann. 12. 46. 4). si quicumque occurs in the classical period (Housman, Man. 1. 657, note and add.) and afterwards: cf. Min. Fel. 16. 9 si quicumque de diuinis quaerat, Macr. Sat. 7. 12. 34 seu quaecumque natantiaproieceris, Paul. Petr. 5. 141 f., Drac. Laud. Dei 1. 98, Sidon. Carm. 23. 482.

et Ptolemaeei litora capta Phari

pt(h)olomenei NVp: tholomenei AFPI. ptholom(a)eae DVo.: Ptolomaeeae uulgo

If Phari means the lighthouse and not the island there is nothing to surprise in the gender, found not only in Suet. Claud. 20. 3 but also in Val. Fl. 7. 84 clarumque serena / arce pharon and Anth. Lat. 876. 7 Romuleique phari (but the feminine in Stat.
