En 1974, le chorégraphe Kenneth MacMillan et l'arrangeur musical Leighton Lucas réalisent à partir de différents extraits d'opéras, musiques de scène, drames sacrés ou mélodies de Jules Massenet le ballet composite L'Histoire de Manon, d'après l'abbé Prévost. Pour aussi surprenant que cela puisse paraître, le corpus ainsi constitué ne comporte aucun extrait de l'opéra-comique Manon. L'ouvrage, dont la musique a été intégralement arrangée pour orchestre seul, est créé au Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Londres, le 7 mars 1974. Il entrera au répertoire de l'Opéra National de Paris le 9 novembre 1990. Il y fera l'objet de reprises au cours de neufs saisons, la dernière en 2014-2015, avec un total de 83 représentations. A partir de 2011, la structure musicale fera l'objet de nouveaux arrangements par Martin Yates. Grand succès dès sa création, cette oeuvre jouit d'un rayonnement mondial.

In 1974, the choreographer Kenneth MacMillan and the musical arranger Leighton Lucas, used a selection of excerpts from operas, incidental music, oratorios, or concert songs by Jules Massenet, to create the composite ballet L'Histoire de Manon, after Abbé Prévost. Surprisingly enough, the piece they created does not include a single excerpt from the opéra-comique Manon. The ballet, with its accompanying orchestral arrangement, was premiered at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, on March 7, 1974. It entered the repertoire of the Opéra National de Paris on November 9, 1990. It was in repertoire for nine seasons, ending with that of 2014–2015, for a total of eighty-three performances. Beginning in 2011, the musical structure was rearranged by Martin Yates. Very successful from its premiere, this work has been performed around the world.
