Summary
Gone are the days when the library was considered simply a physical storage facility for the research and writings of scholars. In the same vein, the role of librarians has changed from being the ‘keeper’ of collections to being an active creator and research colleague. Specialized skill sets position librarians at the forefront of knowledge creation and dissemination. New models of publishing have opened opportunities for alternate methods of information distribution. While the fields of art and design have embraced digital publishing and new media, traditional print still constitutes a large percentage of knowledge delivery. In response, art and design librarians have become active partners in digital art history initiatives while still facilitating access to print formats. The authors in this section explore the ways in which art libraries and librarians navigate through the numerous channels of scholarly communication to support research in all of its manifestations. The areas of digital art history, digital map-making and professional opportunities for art students receive close attention.
