Summary
SFX: Sound of piano music being played on record player, GIRL and BOY talking and laughing in the background. There is a knock.
BRA ZET [as if in a stupor]: Go away! Nobody wants you here!
SFX: Door opens
CYNTHIA [coming on mic]: Good afternoon Bra Zet.
BRA ZET [mock joy]: Oh, it's you my saviour. The great lady from Cripple Care Society! The beautiful Cynthia! [Then angrily] And where the hell is my motorised wheelchair?
[Silence]
Have you lost your tongue?
CYNTHIA: Would you mind turning that music down.
[BOY and GIRL giggle]
[SFX: Music is turned down low]
I have told you a number of times that Cripple Care will not give you a motorised wheelchair unless …
BRA ZET: NOW you listen here, my girl. And listen proper, jy verstaan? Go and tell those white bosses of yours that if I don't get that wheelchair…
CYNTHIA: Why don't you take one of the jobs the society found for you? Do something that will earn you some money. Then you will get your motorised wheelchair. Those are the rules of Cripple Care, and I don't make them.
BRA ZET [laughs mockingly]: Look at me proper, my girl. Do I look like anybody who allows the likes of you to push me around? Ek is ou Bra Zet ek, jy verstaan?
CYNTHIA: I am just telling you what the policy of Cripple Care is.
BRA ZET: I don't give a damn about stupid policies. All I want is a motorised wheelchair. How the hell do you expect me to lead a normal life without a motorised wheelchair? What kind of a welfare society are you supposed to be anyway if you can't afford to buy me a motorised wheelchair?
CYNTHIA: IS there anything else I can do for you?
BRA ZET: Yes! Get lost.
[SFX: Music is turned up very loud]
And don't come back unless you are bringing me my motorised wheelchair.
CYNTHIA [Going off mid]: Well, goodbye. I'll see you again next week.
SFX: door opens and closes.
BRA ZET [Shouting]: Voetsek!
BOY and GIRL laugh
BOY [Still laughing]: Bra Zet, you shouldn't talk so rough to a beautiful lady like that. You are going to scare her from coming here to brighten our lives.
BRA ZET: Beautiful lady? What do you know of beautiful ladies? Jy is net ‘n lighty.
