Summary

The Abbasid caliphate (750-1258) spans the core of the medieval Islamic period, which was famous for the "golden age of Baghdad" and a range of achievements in science, literature, and culture.This introduction provides an overview of the political history of the Abbasids and explores the durability of the caliphate as an institution that continued beyond the age of imperial control.The overview explores perceptions by Muslims and non-Muslims of the caliphate, and surveys the range of medieval Islamic sources that provide the foundation of Abbasid history.
