Summary
Inspired by the civil rights movement and youth counterculture, centered in academia, New Left ideology framed 1960s radicalism. New leftists moved beyond communist and socialist agendas to articulate a universal vision of human equality. Antiracist, antiwar, feminist, and free-speech activists, among others, confronted Cold War politics and society.
They invoked a democratic and inclusive America. In the Port Huron Statement (1962) Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) called for student awareness and political opposition to the military-industrial complex. Also, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) fought against racial segregation and economic injustice by means of sit-ins, voter registration, and “participatory democracy.”
