Summary

Born: December 30, 1975, Cypress, CA

Education: Stanford University, 1994–96

Hitting golf balls since his childhood, Woods succeeded as an amateur at Stanford before taking the men's professional tour by storm through the 1990s. He is a popular figure in media coverage of sports, race, and money.

Woods symbolizes the American Dream of success. After first-season wins in the Las Vegas International and Disney-Oldsmobile Classic, writers touted him as the “future of golf.” They wowed over his commercial contracts, including Nike ($40 million), Titleist ($20 million), and millions more in prize money. They further commented on his mixed-race identity: African American father and Thai mother. In 1997, when he became the first black golfer to win The Masters Tournament, color was foremost in their reporting. In the victory statement, Woods thanked the early black golfers, such as Teddy Rhodes, Charlie Sifford, and Lee Elder, who paved the way for him.

He is committed to equal opportunity and a level playing field. Created in 1996, the Tiger Woods Foundation provides educational and recreational services for disadvantaged and minority children. For example, it awards scholarships to youths participating in its nationwide golf clinics. It also partners with the Professional Golf Association, the National Minority Golf Association, and Target Stores to support wholesome after-school activities.
