Summary
Scholars in Middle High German and Middle English have long been aware of the extent and importance of Chrétien's influence. In recent years the subject has attracted more attention by scholars working in other languages, notably Dutch and Scandinavian, so that the volume of published work on his influence has greatly increased – most strikingly, in the number of studies devoted to post-Chrétien Arthurian romances in French. These have evolved from traditional source study to reflect new awareness of original adaptation, intertextuality, mouvance, and the generic changes that might occur as Chrétien's influence extends to modes outside those of medieval romance.
‘Influence’ supposes some direct or indirect connection between or among works, even in modern or contemporary writings (Pk). But comparative studies have also appeared in which the connection first occurs when the scholar makes the comparison, and where actual influence is very unlikely; for these, see U, especially the new section Ue.
