VARIÉTIÉS
“L'insertion dans le Cosmos du discours du comte Rosse, où le noble président de la Societé Royale plaidait avec tant de ehaleur la cause de la machine à calcul de M. Babbage, nous a valu l'honneur d'une lettre de M. Ménabréa, savant italien très-distingué, qui sáest aussi occupé de cette question. Voici la lettre du mathématicien Turinais:
“En parcourant la livraison du 6 avril courant de votre intéressant journal le Cosmos, j'ai apprig avec un vif plaisir que l'on s'occupait sérieusement en Angleterre de mettre à exécution la Machine analytique de M. Charles Babbage. Dans le discours où M. le comte Rosse rend compte des démarches qui ont déjà été faites dans ce but, j'ai surtout remarqué le passage suivant: ‘Avant de prendre une détermination et de me mettre en eampagne, j'écrivis à plusieurs hommes éminents par leur savoir, et leur demandai si, dans leur opinion, on aurait fait un grand pas au point de vue de la science théorique et pratique, si les vues de M. Babbage, telles qu'elles sont exposées dans le petit essai publié par lui, sous le titre de Ménabréa, étaient complément réalisées. Leurs réponses furent unaniniement et fortement affirmatives.’
“Comme je ne suis pas entièrement étranger à cette question, permettez-moi, Monsieur, de vous communiquer quelques détails qui ne seront pas sans intérêt pour les personnes qui s'occupent de science.—Je suis bien réellement l'auteur du petit écrit que M. le comte Rosse attribue à M. Babbage, sous le pseudonyme de Ménabréa.
